2008 Specialized XC Expert

Bike upgrades:

Front shock from Rock Shox Recon to Rock Shox Reba dual air (-203g), has improved ride and cornering grip, this was well worth it. Trimmed seat pole, drilled bash guard and removed other bits of metal and accessories from around the bike (-98g), replaced back sprocket with Sram PG980 (-128g), Turner titanium skewers (-65g), Crankbros pedals (-55g). Total weight saving 549g.

Have now made the conversion to titanium bolts, I was going stainless but have found titanium bolts from Virtual Village Ltd are not much more expensive. I've detailed it here for others to get an idea of what it cost and how much weight it saved, but the value in doing this isn't just weight, it's also the clean look of shiny bolts. Toltal cost was $73.30 AUD so only 0.73c / gram and still in the range of cheaper weight savings. The same bolts from Pro-Bolt Australia would be over $200, so not really economical.

Disk brake bolts:
M5 10mm x 12 - disk rotor (-1.4g) = 16.8g
M6 29mm x 4 - caliper mount bolts (-4.2g) = 16.8g
M6 20mm x 4 - disk brake mount (-3.2g) = 12.8g
Frame and gear bolts:
M5 16mm x 1 - Front derailleur mount bolt (-1.8g) = 1.8g
M5 16mm x 1 - Front derailleur cable bolt [cut to 10mm] (-1.4g) = 1.4g
M5 15mm x 1 - Rear derailleur cable bolt [cut to 10mm] (-1.4g) = 1.4g
M5 15mm x 3 - gear cable bolts (-1.74g) = 5.2g
M6 20mm x 2 - seat post mount (-3.2g) = 6.4g
Headset mount bolts
M5 16mm x 4 - handlebar mounts (-1.74g) = 17g
M6 20mm x 2 - stem bolts (-3.2g) = 6.4g
M6 35mm x 1 - stem bolt (-4.4g) = 4.4g
Control mount bolts:
M6 20mm x 2 - brake lever bolts (-3.2g) = 6.4g
M6 20mm x 2 - gear lever bolts [cut to 15mm] (-1.74g) = 3.5g
