2 browns and a red belly black at castle

Read a recent article on ABC about snakes coming out after the rain and warm weather. Apparently looking for flushed out food (frogs, rodents?). Anyway work mates keep telling me a king brown can run a person down on foot, wondering if anyone knows if this is true? I'm assuming it's a king brown down the bottom of the hill at Castle. Not too keen on testing it out. Even going full boar on a mtb.

Well as far as i can tell its just a big brown, king browns are part of the black snake family, they are usually reluctant to strike, but hey any snake will bite if you stand on it.Smile the scales on top of head are different. single on a brown double on a king. and yes they will be out looking for small animals that have been flushed out in the rain.

Ok, so is the point of this thread to scare the sh*&t out of me and make me become a roadie? I recently encountered a little black at Karwatha... didnt see him till i was riding over him

I swear I am getting soft as I get older. As a young pup growing up in far Nth West QLD I had no issue bunny hopping the odd brown or black sun baking across my path.... now the thought of that makes me yelp like a big girl....Blab Blab BlabOh thats right... I am a girl. Continue....

I ran over a green snake at Karawatha yesterday. Same thing, I didn't see it untill it was under the bike. I'm sure it got as much of a fright as I did

(and Strongy was more scared than both of us put together Hilarious )

That takes my tally up to two flat snakes at Karawatha.

I ran over a snake when I was traveling very slowly up a steep hill. The snake was traveling across my path and I did not see it until my front wheel went over it, the snake then turned around and I ran over it with my back wheel as well. If it had kept going instead of turning around, my back wheel would have missed it. Rather frightening as I had to keep pedaling or end up on top of it.

Yeah, they seem to head back to were they come from. I was heading up a hill a few weeks back, a little fella passed in front of me, but then turned around and went under the front wheel. Think I missed him with the back though.

Yesterday "our" ABC reported that 6 people had been hospitalised in Qld with snake bite. Sounds like a fair few in a day.

I run up at Castle Hill every morning, I havent seen any up there in the couple of weeks, but im looking carefully as the grass is pretty think in some places. The only 2 ive seen since the mass sightings in their mating season, were both on the bottom fire road, our favourite brown down one end, and right up the other end was a small red belly bout 2ft long, the dog and i both jumped over it ,it was travelling that fast from one side to the other. Yes i S##t myself.,

Karawatha is always full of snakes. Usually the one-eyed trouser snake variety.

Last year we did a road trip and stopped at Awaba in NSW for a spin.

My riding partner commented that there must be a lot of people riding there as you could see the their tracks in the sand.

On closer inspection.... I shat myself. They were all snake tracks. It was like we were on a freaking snake highway or something. Seriously there were so many visable tracks in the sand. We didnt actually see any.... but the thought of snake highway made me suggest that we turn around and head back to the main trails to ride

Ok heres one for you.........How many of us ride with a pressure bandage in our camelback. I know my other 1/2 has one in his, but sometimes im not riding with him, so im guilty of a no. It is one of the most important items we can have in snake season. Can be what gets you back to the car conscious, if where in the middle of nowhere.

Help me, Jesus! Help me, Jewish God! Help me, Allah! Aah! Help me, Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise, use your witchcraft on me to get the snake off of me!

Look, I like the Christmas Jesus best, and I'm sayin' grace. When you say grace, you can say it to Grownup Jesus or Teenage Jesus or Bearded Jesus or whoever you want

Yeah, if you took your clothes off you'd poke everyone's eyes out!!!

I figure that if you get bitten by a really bad-arse snake, the effort that it takes to get back to your car from the middle of no where will finish you off. You can always use something to wrap a wound up with - I have my pump wrapped in a long thin piece of rag stuffed in my camel pack. Or you could use a shirt or something. That's why I usually ride with Strongy I can send him back to the vehicles and there is enough material from one of his shirts the bandage an entire battalion! Big hug
