Ditto all above comments.

Great summary MA. I wasn't aware of some of the early history. I'm particularly appreciative of all the terrific people I've met through this website in just a few short years on a bike. This website certainly does provide that 'community' feel and is a great tool for so many people (and businesses). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the info Steve.

I remember a few years back looking at the 'Total members' and seeing it approach 1000 members and thinking how impressive that was. It's at 9548 now and growing everyday.

Have you got any offical stats on member numbers? How quickly it grew? Was there a spike in a particular year with new members joining?

Would be interestignto see if you have that info - if not, all good.

Job well done guys !

Cheers Shakeem! That member figure is a highly culled number too because we got rid of all the members that joined but never returned etc. We don't really have any stats on the members though.

could not agree more...

In my introduction to MTBing I went over the bars 9 time in the first weekend, but I kept reading, laughing and learning.

I would looked forward all week to a chase ride. I thought it was an awesome way to meet people, learn the tracks, technics, and get a solid ride in for my capabilities. I'm much better now...

I am grateful MadAissie and Le Angel that you set this sit up in Brisbane, it a fantastic asset and resource to have at the back door. Thank you

MTB Dirt - History

I'll echo most of the comments above - very interesting reading the history of the site.

Let me introduce myself - my name's Jeremy. I was mates with Nath & Ted when we decided to start this site (eg: mtb.dknx.net). We had stumbled across a hand-drawn map of gap creek's trails that I think had originated out of TC's Bike Barr - Nath was good mates with Tony and some of his crew there. So one day (back in '01 - possibly '02?) we thought it'd be a good idea to share the map with like-minded riders.. and thus, mtb.dknx.net was born.

Ted was big on making websites back then, so I stole some staff hosting from WebCentral (who I was working for at the time), and managed to keep crediting off our hosting for a year or two.. but eventually the excess data became too much (I think one month was about $700!) - because you guys kept logging onto the archaic "forum" - thank god that's been upgraded!

I should also mention Ted meeting up with Gillian, and her pushing the GCTA thing - is great to see it all successfully off the ground.

As for me, I pretty much stopped riding MTBs and took up motocross in about '04 and haven't logged in a lot since. I can honestly say though that I'm proud to see this site grow into what it is today - looks like ted was on the money with handing over the reigns to mad aussie and crew - well done guys Smile I've heard the site come up in conversation now and then with various people, and it always brings a smile to my face to hear people talking about it so enthusiastically.

So fast forward to today.. I'm getting back to my roots a little and am picking up a new Giant Trance on friday - can't wait to get out there again and see what you guys have done to the trails! I hear it's changed a fair bit.. Smile See you out there.

Hi Kawajez,

We have thought about Ted off and on and what he was up to these days. Sure has grown since you were around, we are currently getting 16321 unique people each month, 7370802 pages read and going through over 100gig of bandwidth, a month as well, which increases every year.

Great to hear your back out on the bike, may see you out there one day 09smile
