MTB Dirt - History

Hey Jeremy

I think the map was drawn by Andy (Mr Universe) McNaught. I still have a copy of that old map somewhere. I seem to remember seeing a picture of his daughter somewhere as well.....

MTB Dirt - History

I think the site is why I got into MTB. I found it prior to being a rider while doing research on MTB impacts for my environmental science degree.

After seeing all the fun people were having I bought a bike and it was on in earnest. I will credit MTB-Dirt with bringing me into the sport and helping me find a passion that I am pleased to be getting back into.

Once upon a time when the site was smaller we had the “In your face” section that introduced members. I managed to be selected to be interviewed for the section. The squeaky wheel got grease I guess.

So after some rather major life crisis and illness I found myself unable to ride and wandered away from the sport and the site. The bikes gathered dust and the middle expanded drastically.

Once things were back to a semblance of normality I decided to ride again. The first stop wasn’t the bike shop; it was MTB dirt to rediscover the passion.

A couple of riding trail suggestions and we were away again. I need suggestions as I am not living in Brisbane anymore.

So I guess this could be called an ode to MTB and the great people behind the scenes and the community in your face. Those who remember my singing on chase rides will be glad to not hear me putting this one to music.

My thanks to one and all

MTB Dirt - History

I think I joined MTBdirt around 2003...when living in Japan and trying to find places to ride in Brisbane...Google was my friend liking me to MTBdirt...upon returning home I managed to find a few like minded people to ride with on this site. Ended up racing and met more and more people...it soon got to the stage I had so many great MTB friends I didn't really want to return to Japan!!! I was riding most nights during the week and tried to join 2-3 rides over the weekends. Being a downhiller in Japan...and becoming an XC rider in Australia, I certainly gained some fitness over the years!

After a year or so in Brisbane, a few changes to my situation resulted in me staying here longer than expected. I continued riding with other members before starting up adventure racing. Over the years of AR, romance blossomed with fellow member Porky and we are now happily married with a 5month old son!

Unfortunately, that means less riding these days but it's all worth it. Not racing any more but plan to get back into it one day! The social rides will do me for now!

I remember meeting you Wenji.

I was leading an MTB Dirt group through Daisy Hill that day and we saw you out by yourself and said hi. An hour later we crossed paths again and convinced you to tag along with us I think.

I remember making that avatar too Smile

You and Porky are one of the success stories of the MTB Dirt Dating Service I guess Smile Congrats on both the marriage and the family.

I just think that MTB is a brilliant sport where newbies and experience can ride in a race and have the time to say g'day to each other without a whole lot of ego and too cool for schoolnes creeping in. Great confidence booster.

Plenty of fun rides have been had, even if I did agree to go for a ride with Wenji at Mt Cootha... (I still hate hills). Are you still at AfCom Wenji? And congratulations on weddings and babies.

Loved getting drunk, I mean, seriously competing at the 12/24hr races at Kooralbyn. The Tajmahootchie will make a comeback again one day! And I do still feel bad about my misdirected chocolate bar throw to Ox (I think, or maybe LazyRay?), which kind of maybe hit a little kid in the head...

Even being out on the checkpoints with the SES crew was a laugh. Music blaring, saying g'day to all. Pancakes anyone???

Fun times, should get the bike fixed up and come back out and enjoy it before I move to Townsville for a couple of years.

Sure it was a chocolate bar, sure.bootyshake

Though I'm not sure it was me, has LazyRay raced (or even ridden) lately?

It wasn't lately, it was going back before I got into the firies. It wasn't you mate. The memories are slowly coming back, I think it was the race you got serious monkey butt when you were riding solo. Maybe. Honestly, can't remember now who was the choc recipient now though.

On a separate note though, I went into Kooralbyn yesterday for a look see and a trip down memory lane (I grew up out there). Holy crap what a ghost town now. Hopefully the rumours of someone buying the place to bring it back are true, as there's not a whole lot going for it out there now.

Sorry for the thread derail.

No, I left the Ambos a little while ago...hubby in shift work and me in shift work was just not working! Smile Miss it but enjoy not being up all night abused by drunk people too.

Sigh Kooralbyn does hold a lot of good memories.....if I was a billionaire I could buy the place and make a great MTB park!

I remember the days of DKNX!

MA the site traffic is unbelievable!! I'd bet half of those hits are from the 'calling dan oppy luke andy thread' boys.
