Can I degrease my chain on my Bike

Hi All, I was just wondering if I can spray some degreaser onto a cloth and then spin the chain along it, without having to remove the chain? Are there any issues with doing this? I know I should probably buy a chain breaker etc. and do a proper job, but being a Pom I like to take the easy way out and if cutting a corner will not kill me, I will do it.

Also, any tips on cleaning front and rear derailuer without taking them apart would be very helpful Smile

Cheers

Yes Yes Yes.

This is one of the recomended ways to clean a chain.

Suggest using mineral turpentine or diesel though, not degreaser.

All you want to do is remove the surface lubricant and grime, not the lube deep in the chain links.

Then you can use a dry style lube like Rock n Roll to keep the chain degreased and lubed.

You may also need to clean your chainrings, cassette and jockey wheels. A bit more turps and a paintbrush works a treat on these. Then rinse off with water.

Edit a screwdriver is good for scraping gunk of jockey wheels while back pedalling.

If you use one of the sram powlinks http://www.phantomcycles.com.au/p-595-sram-powerlink-gold-9-speed-4-pack.aspx to join the chain, it is very easy to remove the chain to clean it.

This is a Sram scam! I have never found a powerlink I could open.

Long live connex links, for they saved my sanity!

I also prefer the Wipperman Connex links over the sram powerlink.

You can remove the sram with a certain amount of specialist technique. Push one side of the link towards the back of the bike with one hand, push the other side of the link towards the front of the bike with your other hand and at the same time, squeeze the links together with your third hand. Easy!

Or, just go and buy a wipperman connex link.

I have not tried the wipperman connex link, however I find it easy to remove sram powerlinks. I used to use one of those chain cleaners with rollers and brushes that you clamp onto the chain, but I now find it much easier to remove the chain using the powerlink, and put the chain in a container of kero.

I am using the powerlinks with shimana CN-7001 and HG-93 chains. I won't be using the shimano 9sp chain joiners again.

Connex links are easy to undo, they must be put on the correct though to avid an unintended delinking. SRAM links are easy to undo if a bit stiff, just use pliers with the link placed diagonally in the jaws. No need for a specialist tool you'll be lucky to use only very occasionally.

I used to be a chain dunker to clean, even ultrasonically cleaned my chains. So clean you could almost eat of them. But that shortens the life, the good original lube which is largely unaffected gets cleaned away accelerating wear internally. Nowadays being a mostly SSer, I just wipe chain, relube with my personal favourite which is a blended formula and works very well.

As for the original question, yes you can clean on bike, be careful though as any solvents that get around to unwanted areas can affect your maintenance of other parts of your bike. Things such as wheel bearings, pivot points on derailleurs, jockey wheels are just some immediate areas to be wary of.

A good quality wet lube e.g Tri Flo is the best way to clean your chain. Unless you let your chain get ridiculously dirty there is no need to degrease it.

First apply the lube (about one drop per link)

Second leave it overnight to settle into the links

The next day you can wipe it all off. You can't wipe too much cause by leaving it overnight the oil will seep in between the links (the only place that actually needs lube).

Doing this will also remove any excess dirt and grime. do this once every week to ten days and you should never need to degrease your chain.

How often do you lube your chains. I've been may have been overdoing it - MTB after every ride (25-35k) commuter > 100k's.

What sort of lube are you using?

If a wet lube (i.e. oil) how well do you wipe it down a few hours after reapplying it?

I use a wet-lube - Finish Line 'Green'.

Geared MTB every 2nd or third ride. SS MTB - wait until I hear it crunching... SS Roadie, once a week.

Wipe down chain while still on the bike - using a rag in my hand gripping around a section of chain and back pedalling.

Apply lube to chain. back pedal for about 10-20 seconds.

Leave it o'night and wipe off excess oil from chain and chainrings/cogs the next day after allowing the oil to reach into the rollers.

Not sure if it's the right thing to do, but here's what I've been doing lately and it's working really well....

I bought a bulk pack of baby wipes when I was Aldi last.

After a ride I crank the chain through while holding the baby wipe over it, then put a bit of Rock'n'roll lube on afterwards. I do the same thing with the roadie.

My chains have never run so clean and well.

I used to let them gunk up for a while and then take them off, degrease and lube. But I've got a lot of bikes and that was becoming a bit of a task.

Now just a baby wipe and lube after each ride and I'm done.

Also - the $13 I spent on the SRAM quick link remover tool was so well worth it - one of my favorite tools - takes the chain off easy and you don't have to get dirty in the process.
