Advice on $5000 trail/AM bike

My bike was stolen few weeks back and now insurance company has said I have $5000 to spend on a replacement.

I am heavily considering a Trek Fuel Ex9 or Remedy 8 - i know one is trail and other is all mountain, but can't decide.

Do you guys have any other recommendations from other brands? EG Specialized or Giant Trance?? I would want something that can still be ridden uphills, and around all day comfortably.

I just started mountain biking again and am open to all suggestions and advice.

I've been checking out the Pivot Mach 5 - but it might stretch your $5k, still worth a look given the reviews. Also Santa Cruz Blur LT is fun, but again not quite sure of the money.

The advice of the day is going to be test ride test ride test ride.

Touche! I completely forgot about Yeti, I am used to them being completely out of my price range haha.

I know of a 575 with Fox, X0 and XTR for well under that price. PM me for details.

Advice on $5000 trail/AM bike

Thanks guys,

I'm pretty keen on a Yeti now.

Leaning towards the 575 - is it much heavier than the ARC 5 Alloy? I can live with a bit more weight if it means a more versatile bike.

Anyone know the weights of each?

Whats the big deal about Yeti? They're basicly an expensive single pivot.

Look at the Pivot Mach 5. DW link. or a Blur LT or even and Intense both using VPP.

Even a Spesh with FSR is better than a single pivot.

Or if Single pivot is what you want then a Commencial Meta 5.5

Don't know what all the fuss is over Yeti.

Fire away Yeti deciples.Bow down

Thanks for your input, i'm still open to ideas eh.

I can't find anywhere online that lists the prices of the Mach 5. Anyone know?

EDIT: Just called jetblack

RRP for XT Build: $6949
RRP for XT/SLX build: $5999

Pretty expensive.

What about the Blur LT for sale on this site? Bike shop mechanic owned - much better spec than you will get new. (you'll still have $1500 left of your budget to spend at the shop)

I've bought my last 2 high spec bikes for half price and they were 1-2 years old - XTR and XO bikes for $3000-$3500 will save you a lot of money. Worth the risk in my opinion, even if you have to replace a few bits (or even the frame eventually)

Ride Inn Virginia have Pivots. Thats the only place I have see them.

What bike where you riding and what are you intending to do with the new bike?

The Trek is also getting good reviews but is essentially a single pivot. Great geomerty though. I'd also consider the Specialized Stumpjumper. The 2010 is now 140mm travel and has IMO the best geometry for a play bike. 420mm Chainstay length and 68.5 Head Angle.

TBSM has some sweet build kits also a good bike brand is the morewoods their 2010 bikes look amazing and witha good build would smash most bike out there.

Also designed to be more of a AM bike that can pedal like a XC bike

I would consider second-hand but I don;t think my insurance company will let me replace for a second-hand private sale bike. Has to be from a shop and new.

I used to have Norco Fluid LT with upgraded bits and pieces.

I didn't mind challenging uphills and XC. I like downhill. I don't jump that much, just like fast flowing single track. (like anyone else out there) hahah

All I had to do is ask them to transfer the money into my account. It was in there the next day. AAMI claims assessors can approve bank transfers up to 5 kilodollars.

I justified it by saying that we had already ordered new bikes as we were quite keen to get them replaced ASAP.

If you're not keen on my PM, I would suggest a BMC, maybe a trailfox, or a Commencal Meta 5. Should be in your budget. Its not in Brisbane, but go and see Troy at Yellow Jersey in Ipswich for the BMC, it will be worth your while.

If you want to stay in the XC realm then the Fuel EX, Stumpy, Trance X ect are the pick. 5" travel and still quite light. The bigger bikes will be great going down but hurt you on the climbs. They still climb and if DH interests you more then they are the pick. Its the geometry you want to be looking at.

In saying this I rode an Enduro at the last Korallbyn 24hr and finished 10 laps in my team of 4.

A recent review in AMB about December for All mountain bikes was a good read. I think the Remedy won.

Scott Genius is another option.

I'd check with your insurance company. Suncorp just sent me the check to do what I wanted after I got replacement/repair quotes from a bike shop.

If it were up to me, I'd pick up the Giant Anthem X LTD 2009 at Yellow Jersey for less than 5k. Full XTR build, carbon SID race forks. Wouldn't be much good except for XC racing (or pretending you are XC racing though).

I would definately consider a Pivot Mach 4. 99 Bikes have demo's available and the reviews on mtbr.com are pretty complimentary over this bike. If my upgrade fund was at it's top I would probably choose this bike. Also, there is the Pivot 429 if you are at all interested in a 29'er. Not really an all-mountain bike bike 29'ers are a seemingly popular choice for a lot of people these days. (they can't all be nuts - can they?)

I did see a very nice carbon yeti 5 frame at For the Riders the other week. The guys up there indicated that they have bundles of groupset + bars + seats etc. that they can package together for a 'deal'. So worth checking that out. They also had some nice looking new cannondales up there too.

Have fun!
