Logan/ Redlands Enduro Ride

Rough route is as follows: BMX Carpark, Stepover, 5-ways, Buhot Creek trail, Big Red, Kimberley Plateau, Stupidly Happy, West Mt Cotton / Gramzow / German Church Roads, Bayview Conservation Park, German Church Rd, Valley Way Shops (rest-stop), Sanctuary Drive, Mount Cotton Rd, Eastern Escarpment via Mt Cotton Rainforest Gardens ($2 entry), Karringal, Schoeck Road, Pony Trail, Ford-Avalon Road, Daisy Hill Singletrack / Firetrails until everyone's had enough.

DrGeoff,

Thanks for organising the ride - looks like we will have double figures for this ride and some pretty hardened riders at that. Should be fun! Whippetboy was practicing his trash talk last night in preparation.

1 question on the route. I'm not familiar with your proposed route up the Eastern Escarpment - is this just going up the sealed road (Mt View Rd) that turns to gravel after the houses and heads up to the lookout at the top? If so, any good reason for going up this way rather than the challenge of the climb from West Mt Cotton Rd up the ridgeline?

Yes this is the girls way of going up but at least it can be ridden all the way to the top. I would suggest WMC, Escarpment and over and down to the gate and ride back up again but I'll happily tag along through the gardens.

Geoff, there is no longer a reason to go via the slippery log creek crossing as the single track in has been bulldozed and the route to Bayview has got housing development through it. Rather than go via Gramzow I would suggest heading straight to German Church Rd via Wuduru. This will give us a chance to show the single speeders how ridiculous their bikes are. What we really need is a 2nd water point, maybe Karingal or somewhere to give us the juice to kick on for a century.

I would also vote for WMC up to Escarpment - another opportunity for the SS riders to become legends...... there's your challenge Rowan - ride further up the Escarpment than WhippetBoy!

Didn't know that Gramzow even exisited - we always go via Wuduru to Bayview

Back in the day there was a single track from Valley Way shops into Bayview but its now streets and houses.

Yes, classic case of habitat loss.

I have noticed some dis-satisfaction as to the chosen route for this ride.

This was originally posted over a week ago and I am not going to sit here and justify why I have chosen this way. If you want to join this ride, then please feel free to join it. I have already accomodated a date change to suit other people (not myself).

If you don't like the chosen route, then please don't come along. I'm sure there's enough of you to probably negotiate your own ride - I would suggest on a separate thread.

Otherwise, the ride remains unchanged. If you do not want to ride, please post here.

Apologies DrGeoff,

Certainly no dissatisfaction from my end - was just adding to the discussion based on:

I don't care which way it ends up going, it should be awesome.

I wasn't particularly aiming at you Chris4242. I found this post a little insulting though...

JimR, if you are that desperate to walk your bike up the cow-pat path, then once we have reached the top of the EE (via the gardens) you could descend to the quarry, ride along WMC Rd to the farm and come up the farm track, and then chase us down in Karringal (in the traditional direction).

Hey DrGeoff,

I'm sure no disrespect was meant.

Once we have completed Bayview, we could always split the group for those that want to try and conquer the EE ridge climb from WMC Rd. If people are still feeling keen at that point, then I would be happy to lead a group that way and meet up again at Karingal. We could go the opposite direction around Karingal to ensure we find you again.

When you get a riding group this size (especially with a group that don't normally ride together), there will always be some discussion on route and this will also be dependant on bike type, fitness etc and aim of the ride (e.g. I don't understand why anybody would want to ride a SS on this ride....)

You have organised this ride with a view to train and to peak for an upcoming event and people need to be respectful of this. I agree you should stick to your route and not jeopardise your training. An alternative loop up EE should sort out the sadistic climbing addictions of the others while the rest can follow your guide..... (FYI - the ridge climb is ridable again (well about as ridable as it gets!), well it was a month ago)

Look forward to meeting you on Saturday morning.

Jason

Dr Geoff, no dis-satisfaction here mate I'm happy to follow the trail as defined. A bit of banter and trash talk about a trails pros and cons is a good thing eh..

And I would point that you got one thing wrong- I ain't no walker.

Can you clear EE, Jim? Good job, buddy! It's still my nemesis - always conk out on the steep bit and have to walk a small bit! Grr! That said, I've never hit it with less than 60km in the legs so one day I'll hopefully get it.... I'll watch you and cheer anyway if I do slip off.

Yes I've done it a few times now with many failures. That steep pinch bit (10-15 metres) is where you need to have saved the legs enough for a full gas effort with timing and technique across the angle right to left and you should then be able to spin out the rest of the way to the top- a good feeling.

I appreciate the comments posted above and I apologise for being a bit snappy.

It just seemed a little discourteous to suggest altering the route without any input from the organiser.

I know you're not a walker mate. But almost everyone else is and I know you've said previously that you could count your number of successes up the EE on one hand.

im sure most SS rider are aware of how ridiculous their bikes are(my bike is named ' the foolish bike'), though i met a guy once who gave some guy on a elsworth a bit of stick in a race once stirring.

im looking forward to this ride, its going to be a fair sized group going

Unfortunately, family affairs are interfering with this ride for me. Grrrr.

I will have to start earlier and cut this ride short, as I need to be back to meet some relatives for lunch. At least I have Monday off to make up the lost riding time.

So apologies all. If someone else wants to take up the reins as organiser for this ride, then that would be greatly appreciated.

Goodness, I wasn't expecting it to take us past lunch time!! Pity you can't make it Dr. Geoff. Thanks for organising anyway. Next time, ey? I nominate Jason as gorup leader/pace setter. As it's very close to our 'most-saturday' loop anyway, he knows it well and has rarely got us lost or injured....

My formula is that ride time is directly proprtional to group size!!! With unforseen mechanicals plus with all the SSers dragging the chain (excluding NF of course) I calculated the ride time blowing out beyond 7 hrs (assuming you all stuck together) But hey, I expect you guys to prove me wrong.

Anyhow, I'll still be out there on Saturday, 1 hr ahead of all you gun-riders going my own steady pace. You'll probably catch me in Karringal somewhere...

No worries. Well I still plan on being home by 10:30 as usual so I'll be breaking away early if necessary. That way Jimmy won't shame me on the EE like he did at OHV in May! Cheers, Geoff
