Hi All. Planning a 2 week trip to NZ in about a months time, and I am looking at options for doing a couple of MTB tours while I am over there. My girl and I are trying to cram a fair bit in while we are there, but I am trying to plan at least one free day in Rotorua and 1-2 free days in Queenstown.

I've done some searching, and Planet bikes in Rotorua is one of the few places I can find which does guided tours including bike hire etc. The bikes they offer are pretty basic, ideally I'd like something with disc brakes and a decent hydraulic-dampened fork. Taking my own bike isn't really practical, and as I am not going with any other MTB riders, I'm thinking a guided option is probably best for safety. Has anyone done anything similar in Rotorua, or can they recommend something?

Queenstown wise, I am looking at tours with either Vertigo or Fat Tyre Adventures. They both offer a range of Heli tours and straight riding tours. Can anyone recommend anything they have done here? I dont rate myself as a super confident downhill rider, so I guess my preference woul be for something a bit more XC oriented. They are both fairly pricey, but the experience would be worth it, and they offer pretty well specced GT duallies as part of the package.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey mate,

I did a two week stint in queenstown / wanaka last november and it was amazing! although two weeks was not enough time to ride every trail I wanted to. In the queenstown region there are so many trails all varying in style and difficulty. Some of my favourite areas were the seven mile bike trail networks & above the gondola there is a trail called turd sandwich (this is a must do trail ) Skippers canyon is also an awesome ride , there are a few companies in Q that take tours up there. Wealso did an epic climb up to Snow Park which is out across the valley from cardrona. It was an gnarly climb up the access road but at the top there is a bike park then the reward of taking Megs Pack track all the way back to the vallley floor which takes about 30 minutes compared to the 3 hour climb, plus also it comes out just near the cardrona pub which is a top place to finish up for a cold one. Anyway if you need any more info drop us a line.

I'm heading over in May myself, similar story to you where I have limited time available on the bike. From what I've found southstar adventures have a pretty good rep (http://www.southstaradventures.com/), the guy there got back to me straight away about their shuttles and where to hire bikes from. I'm leaning towards them, if not Fat Tyre is my back up option. I'm just wanting to make sure that whatever I do actually involves mountain biking, not just riding down a fire trail to cater to the tourists - make sure you ask!

I did the heli-bike in Queenstown with Vertigo, Heli up to the top of the mountain and ride 18km of single track down $350pp includes a Giant Trance x to ride helmet and knee and shin guards. Sounds Great so off we went.

Heli ride is about 7mins and is the best part, if you have never been MTBing before the Vertigo option would be great, but if you have any experience at all its a bit boring more like 2km of easy single track ( More challenging single track at Bunya ) and the rest is a dirt road. I would look at the Fat Tyre option if i were to go back again.

Thanks for the responses so far. Nads, that's exactly the kind of first-hand report I was hoping for. It all sounds awesome on the website, but I'd be disappointed if I shelled out 400 clams on something which wasn't worth it.

I'd love to take my own bike to smash up the trails and go exploring in Rotorua for a week or so....unfortunately it won't be on this trip. I guessing that might be something done next year, perhaps after going down to Adelaide for the TdU. Hmmm...now that would be sweet. 2 weeks...2 bikes....2 countries, one Epic holiday. Its a Beauty

Good thread we are heading over for three weeks on our honeymoon to South Island in May/June and I have been granted permission to go mtbing. Obviously I will try and squeeze some more in where I can. But looking at day trips on the south island. Probably guided as I don't have time at the moment to research the trail network. But if it's straight forward like southstar that might be an option.

Aaron something to be aware of is that a lot of companies shut down for the winter season - this is something I asked about specifically to the companies I've contacted. Almost all said it depends on when the snow comes, which is apparently sometime in May. My mate got caught out last year when he went and found they had all closed for the season.

Most will run a trip with a minimum two people so if you can line up something with a fellow rider at least you know you'll get some riding in!

Thanks Jet good call! I will aim for early in the holiday in that case to increase my odds and keep my expectations in check. Snow pffft no need to stop riding because of snow as long as they supply a Pugsley.

I know that if you can't find anywhere to hire a bike in Queenstown in the winter months head out to Frankton and go to the element they have bikes for hire all year round.

Outdoor adventure in the heart of queenstown will have hire bikes to. Plus a lot of the trails around queenstown are under the snowline... so as long as you can handle mud and cold..... year round riding.

If I remember there is also a bike store on the road out to coronet that hires aswell.

I'd ask a few questions on www.vorb.org.nz

You'll get some local knowledge, and if your lucky, be able to borrow a bike and get a free tour.

If your going to Quernstown, don't forget Wanaka.

kazmeistyr, big ups for that internet link. I was thinking about posting in a local NZ MTB forum, but wasn't sure where to go.

I've posted something up, hopefully some knowledgable local can hook me up with some "choice tips...eh' bro"?

Had a quick squizz at some of the posts......those fellas take their MTB machinery pretty seriously. Bling....

No wukkas.

Yup, there's bling there all right. 200 page threads just for Santa Cruz's etcCrazy

I'm not sure whether 2 days riding is going to do much for your mental health. After your first taste of some real mud, each day thereafter will seem horribly bland.

Definitly do the fat tyre heli ride if you can, and do the whole day one. I did it in January. About 10 minute heli ride then 23 kms down - 1300 m descent mix of road, single track, sheep track - the most amazing experience I have had. After lunch they take you up another mountain in a landrover and same descent over about 13 kms, more single track and steeper but just as much fun. It was truly amazing and well worth it. The Au $ is quite strong at the moment against the NZ$ so brings the cost down. I took my own bike but they have some pretty good ones there.

Other than that there is some nice single track around Wanaka.

Hey MTB Dirters, back from NZ so I thought I would share my experiences with y'all. First up, Whakarewarewa Forest "The Redwoods" in Rotorvegas. Pics are a bit crappy, from mobile phone camera.

Taking my own bike was not an option, Bike Vegas on Fenton Street hooked me up with this:

Steel framed 29er Haro Mary 1x9. Flat bars, ridiculously large wheels and 9 gears....not the kind of bike I am used to, but it did the job no worries. $50NZ for the day.

The trail network is mammoth....over 100km's of signed MTB trails. Knew I only had one day, so couldn't ride everything I wanted. Rode most of the core centre trails, and climbed up to ride Roller Coaster and Hot X Bun....worth the trip. There was a shuttle available, but I am not a softie, so I rode all the hills to "earn my turns".

The thick tree canopy shades a lot of the trails within the core network. The terrain as a result is very grippy hard-packed soil...totally different to my native Gap Creek.

The walls of trees can be very dis-orienting. Invest in a trail map ($5 from most bike shops or Visitor Centre), or borrow a map from a jet-setting, Post Grad scholarship, potato fondling mate (thanks Stu). The tree canopy puts much of the trail surface in the dark, there was barely a cloud in the sky the day I did this ride, but inside the forest it was dark as. Photo-chromatic lenses for your glasses would be a huge bonus.

The forest is littered with these red Mushrooms. I resisted temptation to take a few up back to the Hotel and hope for some psychedelic affects.

The trails are really well signed, use the map to get your bearings and then follow the red signs to complete the trails. The trails are directional, mind you are not riding the wrong way up any trails.

Every trail is graded 1 through 5. I rode mostly Grade 3 trails and a couple of Grade 4's. Ride to your limits, I was by myself and walked some stuff I would have normally ridden, simply because I was in an unfamiliar spot. Mobile coverage in the forest was also a little bit sketchy in places. The trails are long....and many can be linked up to for a long flowing trail loop. I had only one bidon, which was sufficient as there are places to get water all around the Forest.

Redwoods is amazing place, I'm def going back next year with my own bike to ride. You would need 3-4 days to really do justice to the place, it is huge. I rode for about 6 hours all up, probs covered 50-60km including ride in and out of town. Plenty of carparking if you are driving.

Some general tips for anyone heading that way:

Take your bike if you can. The loaner was adequate, but all the time I was saying to myself "this would be so much better on my bike" etc. I didn't mind the 29er, but it was heavy as. I'd like to ride a decently specced one....maybe I need to have a word with a certain "bling obsessed" rider I see out at the Nundah crit track sometimes..

If you must hire a bike, take your saddle and pedals with you. I took my pedals, but was kicking myself at the end of the ride for not bringing my saddle also....damn WTB P.O.S.....ouch.

Rubber - loaner bike had 2.2 wire bead Kenda Nevegals...waaaaaaay too much tyre for the riding I was doing. If you will be XC'ing rather than hucking, 2.0 inch fast rolling treads with tubeless would be ideal.

"B Rude Not 2" and "Mad if U Don't" are must rides. They flow into each other for over 3km of great singletrack. "Roller Coaster" and the Pump Track are also another great fun. There is the World Cup DH course is in the centre of the park also...I gave that one a miss.

Go with a mate if possible, you'll feel safer and have more fun for sure.

Cheers.

Cheers for that - good read! I'm not doing Rotorua this trip but will be in NZ on Sunday... I'll see what I can find and report from the south island.

Guy's I have been living in Queenstown for 6 months and can't sing it praises enough for trails . The Downhill tracks are just amazing with 3 quality ones with good shuttle access the pick would have to be Snowpark and remarkables , both rough, Snowpark with bigger gaps and drop offs XC trails are good too from 5 hours rides to smashing up 7mile ( kinda gap creekish but better) The shops in town are great, bikes are well specced , and prices are good Eg giant DH1 with full face helmet, knee /shin guards for $110 a day .... Queenstown should be one everyones place to go list if you ride a bike (any bike )

OH and nobody cares if you ride a heap of junk ,a hardtail or dh bike its just about the riding .

Beer's good too aye
