10 places you should ride in QLD (and Northern NSW)

Three Dog,

Thanks for the report and photos. Might give it a go this weekend if the weather holds. How well sign posted is the trail?

Did it take you 31/2hrs to do it one way?

Was thinking of doing an out and back with pub lunch in between.

Cheers

Browy.

Plenty of signage along the way (see photo below) so it was pretty easy to stay on track, sometimes there seems like two ways to go but you'll usually find a Private Property sign to point you away from the wrong track in those cases.

I rode for 3.5 hours to go 22k from Kin Kin to Cooran, one way. Without stopping for photos you could easily do it under 3, maybe less if you push it. I'd recommend skipping the Woondum section if coming from KK, unless you really like to climb. After lunch in Cooran I rode back to KK along the road, about 14k / 40 mins. Going back to KK along the trail could probably be done in 2 - 2.5 hours depending on your speed, it would have a lot more downhill. Print off that PDF map from that site before you go, and I'd be wary about going out there if it looks like rain, could be a real slog!

Three Dog,

Did the KK to Cooran on Saturday morning. Thank you for your info and letting us know about the trail. Was awesome, very beautiful ride with some real effort required to get through it. We went through the forrest trail which is great once you push your bike up the major hill.

Would be great DH coming back from Cooran.

It is amazing what is on your door step that you do not even know about

Thanks again.

Cheers

Browy.

Great to hear you enjoyed the ride, I know what you mean about being amazed at what's around SE-Qld, and that's just 1 of about 8 tracks in that area! Good work on hitting the forrest trail too, the climb is long but the road from the top is great, and yeah it definitely lets you know that it would be a flying downhill one day too haha I better wait until I've installed some better brakes before I give that a go!

Sounds like you may have ridden / walked back up "Arm Pumper" which is ridden down for the now extinct Noosa Enduro.

Overall an awesome ride with great scenery, if you can get out there during the week it's just you and the animals (saw foxes and native bee hives, as well as farm cows and horses). I plan on trying some of the other trails out there soon, if I was to ride Trail 3 again I'd go in reverse (from Cooran to Kin Kin) which would mean a decent road climb at the start, but much more downhill overall. A few of the photos below.

Thanks for the info - I might give this one a go sometime. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I've done this ride several times and variations of it, we normally park at the top of James Mckane lookout, but depending which way you go, you may have to climb up the big hill(highlands rd i think its called) we took a wrong turn once and ended up doing 45km i was knackered after doing that on my Nomad. There is a superb downhill when coming from Cooran side to Kin Kin like i think you mentioned, goes through the forest, its wicked! deffo a highlight for me! its part of the Noosa enduro route, as is a lot of that trail.

Blackstone (Castle hill) and the brand new Mt Joyce mtb park are my two favourite places to ride. Blackstone is very technical and fun, and Mt Joyce is a huge area with a variety of tracks. I can give tours around blackstone if you want.
I've ridden OHV and Gap Creek but they aren't quite as good as Castle Hill and Mt Joyce

Formerly known as spud. I finally rode, with my wife, Mt. Coot-tha/Gap Creek trails. These trails were okay, I guess. The trails are poorly maintained, lack proper trail signs, are way too short, and have logging roads/fire roads at the beginning/end of the trails. I guess we just got spoiled riding the Rocky Mountains in Denver, Co. We are going camping at Conondale National Park soon and would love some info on trails in that area.

Sorry mate, you will never find any thing in QLD that will even come close to what your experienced back in Denver.

If you thought Gap Creek was not up to expectation i wouldnt even bother bringing bikes to Conondale

Thanks TMC_2,

I don't think any mountain bike trails in Australia will even come close to the awesome mountain bike trails in Colorado !

Does anyone know if you can ride in Mount Mee, D'Aguilar National Park. My wife and I camped in the Mt. Mee section and when we were hiking/driving we saw lots of trails marked for motorcycles, hikers, etc but no signs of Mt. bike trails. I assume you could ride on the log/fire dirt roads.

Most of the Mt Mee area is off limits to Mountain Bikes.

However, there is a pretty tough legitimate loop from Pedwell Road, Mt Mee, down R.Williams Road, thru the Wamuran Rail Trail, then back up McLeods Lane to Pedwell Road. It's not for the faint hearted though, and at the upper reaches of McLeods Lane you will be cursing me for suggesting it.

Here's a link to the loop, but please pay special attention to the elevation profile, and make sure your bike has good brakes.

Thanks. My wife and I will give it a try. I don't think the elevation increase and decrease will be an issue. My wife and I rode Mt. bike trails in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

.

Never been to Colorado but I've been to NZ twice mtb-ing. Cheap too. For a $1000 you can have a good 5 days there including car hire and accomodation. I guess that's your next best option. The Kiwis seem to have sorted out their mtb-ing over there.
