Cycling Precinct Concept - Great News!!!

Ok, after going on bit of a walkabout I'm able to update the cycling precinct proposal that was put to Moreton Bay council. I have a meeting with them this coming week to review two possible sites that they have identified. They are going to even show me facility layout concepts which means there has been some work put in to this over the last couple of months. Anyway, they won't disclose the locations til the meeting. I will update when I know more. Again though, the council rep emphasised the importance of the petition and getting signatures. The petition will have to be submitted in the coming weeks and it will be the trigger for the sport and rec team at council to submit the response to the petition and the initial proposal. So if you haven't signed it yet and you like the idea (read previous posts for more info) please sign it, ask your friends and family too. We have the support at council and we need the support of the cycling community to back it. For those that have supported to date... Thanks!

Cycling Precinct Concept - Great News!!!

Good news I met with the Moreton Bay Regional Council Sport and Rec Planning Manager this morning to review and discuss the two potential sites that they have identified as being possible locations for a cycling precinct. One site is in Narangba Valley and the other is over in Albany Creek near the sports fields off the Jinker Track, Bunyaville.

The Narangba site is the old Narangba quarry, and they have actually drafted a master plan for what they have named the 'Narangba Valley Cycle Park'. I was blown away when I saw it as it is the actual concept of a cycling precinct on paper and what they are proposing is great. I have a copy of the draft plan, however at this point in time I cannot put it in the public domain. The beauty about this site is that it is available for this type of project.

The other site at Bunyaville is something that is long term and a little further down the track as far as availability, and there are a number of other factors to be dealt with. However, it is very likely that if this goes ahead that there is a possibility that two sites may eventually be established due to the increasing demand for facilities and the growth of the population in both areas.

I also reviewed a letter of recommendation that Geoff from CQ provided to council. It was a glowing recommendation and fitted in perfectly with the concept (thanks CQ). Council have also received formal notices of support from MTBA, and thanks to 'X' there is great support from North Brisbane MTB club (aka Dirt Dogs), and also BQ are on board. I want to reiterate that this is not purely a Dutton's thing but a community project which the club is an active part of, but also it is something for SEQ (as I have mentioned before and CQ have recognised this will be a first for Qld), so the more clubs and people that get behind this and can see an opportunity to use such a facility should raise their hand. Club representatives can contact Carly Jeavons at MBRC via Carly.Jeavons@moretonbay.qld.gov.au

If this does get up, I have recommended that a steering committee be formed which includes the engagement stakeholders in such a project to assist in the planning process to ensure that we cover all the various groups needs.

The petition will have to be closed Friday week (13/Cool and prepared for submission to the CEO of MBRC the following week. This will trigger the next phase in the process, which will be the Sport and Rec response being the submission of a full report with the draft master plan etc supporting the initial concept. Based on the research, support and facts and figures there is a very good case and we are quietly confident that this will go to a planning stage.

The link to report the concept study report is via http://www.duttoncycles.org.au and the facebook group is at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=119145301449891 If you support the concept please sign an on-line petition by visiting http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/crittrack/ (due to the petition being an online app it asks for a donation after you sign it, just close it and the signature is added)

The site is mentioned in this MBRC document:

And here's a map of the actual site:

I can just imagine a nice Road Crit circuit through there with an MTB crit circuit running through those trees. I really hope this comes to fruition.

It's not too far from Browns Creek Road which has some fun and challenging rough sections that 4wd's can't even get thru, and Roberts Road which connects to some great single-trail on Smiths Road. This would make my Sundays perfect Smile

sounds like an even better course if we include regular CX as well. the plan for Dirt Dogs was to hold some graded races ie A/B/C/D etc, some juniors, CX and a clunker race. I really hope that this comes through.

Where can I access the trails? are they easy to find from Smiths rd? I live just off Oakey Flat rd, didn't know there were trails here.

Petition signed, what an awesome idea!

Smith Road Sth joins Theodore Rd in Kurwongbah. Heading North-East It turns into a dirt road. Don't make the mistake of going into Parklands Court. Smith Rd turns slightly right here and through some bollards which stop cars and 4wds going thru. After about 400m turns into single track down to Mosquito Creek. Up the other side it's a nice gnarly ride till you get to the intersection with the Eric McSweeney Ct emergency flood road.

Before you start the downhill descent to Mosquito Creek you can branch off to the left under the power lines through a gate, and follow a steep fire trail down the hill. If you bear right it eventually joins up with the single track I mentioned above just before the creek crossing.

There are more tracks around that area that I haven't checked out, but as a first try you can get up a pretty good speed down to mosquito creek, and I always feel good at managing to pedal out the other side.

I usually come back via Browns Creek Road and then down through a short horse trail that crosses Mosquito Creek where there's a gap in McCorkmack Road Kurwongbah. But this bit is only any good if it hasn't rained much. the lower part of Browns Creek Road turns into a swamp after a lot of rain.

If you PM me I'll send you some track logs of the ride. Perhaps I can ride it with you sometime? I'm not around this weekend, but any time after that.

There is an upcoming MTB Forum meet of which MBRC is a member - I assume they'll be talking about the concept there so we can also use that group to lend our support the proposal. Every bit helps!

haven't got details handy but it's scheduled for 24th. I can chase up if it's been put on agenda but might be worth checking with MBRC that will be raising it there if you're talking to them.

I understand the MTB forum is invite only, it is mainly the major stakeholders in SEQ being DERM, Sport and Rec, MTBA, BCC, MBRC, Logan, Redlands, Ipswich, Toowoomba and maybe even GCCC. Club reps are also invited along, but it is not open forum for anyone to attend as far as I know.

Yep, it's hosted by Qld Outdoor Rec Federation & reps (or anyone else for that matter) can be invited along regarding specific issues.

That site looks promising. Can I make a suggestion, that if it gets up, that the crit circuit is Lakeside 2.0 assuming there is enough of a hill.? We can just clone it and recreate the best crit course in Brisbane 09fart

Cycling Precinct Concept - Great News!!!

The QORF Mountain bike forum meeting was held today and the usual MBRC was not able to attend. Unfortunately the issue was not discussed.

The description of the forum can be found on the QORF website.

http://www.qorf.org.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=697

http://www.qorf.org.au/_dbase_upl/KK%20MTB%20pres.pdf

To assist communication between stakeholders with interests in the management of mountain bike (MTB) riding in Queensland. Stakeholders include local and State government land management agencies, Sport and Recreation agencies, Mountain Bike Australia, MTB clubs and bike shops, private race promoters and MTB tour operators and those involved in MTB trail design and construction
To assist with the resolution of issues related to the provision and management of MTB riding in Queensland while recognizing rights, responsibilities and obligations of public land managers and the legitimacy of MTB riding.
To develop a functional partnership between relevant stakeholders.

The note are a little dated but the terms are still accurate. The meeting today is essentially a steering group. If you want to find out more about the forum I suggest getting in contact with QORF directly.
