Spraypainting a MTB

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Just wondering if anyone has had their frame professionally spraypainted and what the cost was approximately and whereabouts they had it done. Can it even be done?

I'm looking at a particular fluoro lime colour and after ringing around a dozen or so powdercoaters it can't be done unless I get a special order of that colour done. Minimum order 60kgs or something ridiculous from Dulux.

I've searched the forum and haven't found a thread on this but I may not have searched correctly.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think it has been mentioned before, basically prep the bike and then see if you can get a car body shop to do the work.

I figured as much. Was keen to get a ball park figure. Obviously it's a case of who rather than what you know that could dictate the cost.

I'm thinking anywhere form a carton of beer to $200.00.

It'd help if they had the paint left over from a job as well I'm guessing.

I thought powdercoating was the way to go? I heard about 80 - 100 bucks

I think because you are after a very specific colour then it may be hard, and probably more expensive, but Grip Sport may be worth a shot, again limited colours. They can do all prep properly too - things like headsets, BB threads, dropouts and cable hangers need to be treated carefully when powdercoating, and to a certain extent spray painting.

Powedercoating is the go but the colour I want is not available unless you do a special order of 60kgs or something like that.

The colour I'm after is that metallic lime commodore green you see around the place. I would've thought that would be an off the shelf colour for a panel beater seeing every 2nd car in Australia is a common-dore.

Cost is not a major issue.

Thanks for Grips link but I'd rather not send the frame away.

Do you mean like the 'Kermit' green of the Niner "Air9"?

How much is 60kg of the paint?

Yes. I like that.

Or like this.

Ute

It's not 60kg's of paint it's 60kg's of powdercoat. I didn't ask how much after she told me the minimum order size.

I've even lined up lime green oury grips if I can get this done and a new set of stickers.

Thanks but those posts are dealing with powdercoating.

There's an abundance of information here on powdercoating. I read every available thread on it and was ready to go but I can't get the colour I want so I'm attacking this from another angle.

Any paint shop with a paint system should be able to do it, if you tell them what car its off they just punch it into there computer and it tells them how to mix up the colour, if not google your closest paint supply shop(not house paints) and they mix them up there, i had a small paint system in my old shop and i could mix up any colour, just need to find a paint shop willing to paint a frame, 2-pac paint is no were near as tough as powdercoat, although there is a ceramic clear coat(which most european cars have on them) a tad more expensive but a lot thicker and a lot tougher so i would prob look into that, were abouts are you located, i know a few panel shops on the sunny coast which would be able to do it

Thanks for the info in your post. I'm getting closer.

I'm on the Southside of Brisbane about 30k out from the centre. (That's the Munruben part of the username.)

I'd hate to guess. 6l of clear 2 pack poly for timber used to be $200 years and years ago

For those thinking of a D.I.Y. job or someone down the track searching for any info on spraypainting here is a great link from over at rotorburn.

Spraypainting a MTB

Just made a few phone calls to some panel beaters. The impression I get from speaking to a few of them is it is a fiddly bit of work they'd probably only do as a love job HOWEVER one lovely lass suggested I contact a motorcyle panel beater. Of course! (Smacks head.) It's obvious after someone tells you. Who better to spray a frame than a bike mob.

Anyway the washup is around about $150 if I pull it apart and strip it myself which according to the rotorburn boys is the easiest bit.

The $150 is for a 2-pac finish the same as that which goes on a car or motorbike.

Next question I suppose is, is a 2-pac finish ok for a MTB frame??

Looks like I have a new project! Never pulled apart a duallie before so look forward to some more gumby questions.

Doh!

<Kenzo smacks his head in a similar fashion>

Would be interested to know how to prevent the paint from getting into where the bearings should go. Maybe keep the bearings in place and replace them?

Apparently you just screw in an old BB set from what I've read elsewhere and/or use a combination of tape / grease on the threads.

Are these the bearings you mean? Or do you mean the pivot junction? (Not sure of terminology here.) In any case it can't be rocket science. (Fingers crossed.)

i know a few of the chopper shops up here have had trouble with 2-pac paints on there frames chipping, so they use powder coating, i would look into putting a cermic clear coat on it or maybe asking them to put a extra coat of clear on using a tad bit more hardener in it

(they should use masking tape to tape up the areas were they dont want paint to go)

Good advice. From the talk about the place it seems powdercoating is tougher but aren't bike frames normally painted not powdercoated?

Powdercoating is definitely out for me as I can't get the colour.

It might be pricey to do a second step, but you could get a clear-powdercoat done after getting the colour spray painted on if you're worried about paint over powder
