Are you doing the forks as well? Very nice colour and finish. Can't wait to see the whole bike back together.

Left the forks as is.

The colour is the same as the little Mazda 2's you see around the place. It's called spirited green metallic.

The frame was done by Richard at Advanced Motorcycle Spraypainting at Slacks Creek. 3808 3988. It was $165 including GST which was a bit of an indulgence but it keeps me off the street at night. (Plus he seemed really interested in the work and gave off a good vibe.)

It's a top job, virtually flawless. I put the frame on the front seat and stroked the paintwork lovingly all the home. (The wife wasn't happy to sleep on the couch.)

I'd be tempted to go without stickers. What's your plan there?

Great question. I've ordered Trek stickers from the US and they're en-route. At first I was going to sticker and re-badge the head tube it and put some minor pinstriping on it. Now I'm not so sure.

The options are sticker it, sticker & pinstripe it, pinstripe it only or leave it blank.

Looking at the frame in it's finished state I must say I'm leaning towards a minimalist look or fully blank.

As you will see below there's a reason MTB's don't usually come out in lime green. (It's bloody difficult to get a good photo of this metallic paint job with a sh#tty point and shoot camera but here goes. The colour looks better and is more subtle in real life than it looks in those photos. )

Thinking I'd be the only bloke blatting around on my lime green machine imagine my surprise when I walked into 99 bikes yesterday to see a fully lime green Norco in one of their display stands. Talking to the bloke there he happily informed me a bunch of the new GT's coming out are also lime green. Ha!

Anyway, I'm happy with. Now to decide whether to sticker it or pinstripe it, a combination of both or just leave it blank.

I would add the head tube badge, some minimal white pinstriping for highlights, and leave it there.

+ another, although if you have black forks some black pinstriping could be very subtle.

Forks are black, wheel rims are white so I was tending towards white. Here's a very quick preliminary mockup. (Paper cut-outs blue-tacked on.)

Will try black ones later.

I like but would like to see the black also. Only problem with the white is they look like high reflection areas, might just be a result of the photo.

Muz, go the black to match your front shocks and rear suspension.

Looks great, one suggestion for those looking at doing similar and don't want to go down the paint stripping path. Ring around painters and engine re-conditioners for a price on an acid dip/bath.

Hell, if you have an old frame and want to get creative DIY hot tank it and then DIY powdercoat it Smile

aaaaaaaaaahhhh...this bloody bike! Well it's not the bikes fault, it's mine.

It is very nearly finished, I'm only probably 2 hours away from frameskinning the rest of it and putting on the front derailleur and it'll be done but finding a couple of spare hours is killing me.

Every night I look at it forlornly in the lounge room getting no closer to being done. (The wife if fair getting the tommy titts with it sitting there for the past fortnight.)

Can't do it this weekend either as I'm away, next week it'll be done for sure. (Fingers crossed.)

Pictures finally, though none of these do justice to the colour that looking at it with the naked eye does. Anyway I like it.

Full XT drivetrain, rockshox recon forks and rockshox MC-3 rear shock, XT shifters and derailleurs, ESI silicone grips, Tectro Auriga brakes, Avid rotors, Mavic wheels, Larsenn TT and Crossmark tires, Candy C pedals and custom decals. Built from OEM parts and other bits scabbed and sponged from fellow mtb-ers and ebay-ers. A duallie on a budget.

Just an update, Advanced Motorcycle Spraypainting (and Decals) don't seem that interested in doing bike frames anymore. They have shut down the little shop where Richard was working on Moss St and they are working from the one premises on the old Pacific Hwy Slacks Creek. I spoke to Jason, Richard's boss.

I have a small job to do which I am going to have a crack at myself first. Anyone else got any suggestions of a paint shop that does small high quality jobs?
