nerang riders - How much travel do you have?

I have been riding in Nerang state forest for over a year on my 6 year old Blur with 100mm travel. I use the fire breaks a little but the bulk of the ride is on the single track that weaves around the forest.

Those of you who ride this area what travel do you have? I am thinking of getting a new bike with maybe 140mm front and back for the descents but know I will pay for it on the ups and there is nothing wrong with my Blur.

Alternatives are the kona abra cadabra but is it 12 kilo of hype ??

Or

I stick a travel adjustable fork on the front of the blur exceeding the max fork length and run at maybe 130mm ?? The importers said I would be fine as they have never had a head tube failure on a Blur and it’s strong enough to take it but they put the limit to segregate the bike in the market from the nomad etc. I don’t do jumps, too old for that but do push the bike and ride the roller coaster.

100mm. 140mm would be nice but I'm never prohibited...

I'm sorry if this is too much a deviation, but can someone post some pictures of Nerang. I'd like to go there, but wonder whether it's reputation as a difficult place to ride is more netcrap than anything. I also have 100mm front and rear and am not interested in caning through there, just riding, smiling and surviving. Cheers.

It's not hard to ride but when you first enter near the velodrome one way or the other you have to do a bit of climbing to get to the bulk of the single track & I suppose its easy to get lost too as there is a lot of single track in there. I've been riding in there for the last year or so on a 100mm Giant Yukon SX which is classed as a recreational bike & it has done the job. Also the Gold Coast MTB Club do a social ride every Saturday from the Nerang MTB shop at @2:30pm which caters for all levels.

Seldon, There should be plenty of 140mm bikes under 13kg if you're up for $4000 +. The kona does look the goods. Don't know if you will be able to source a test ride though. Check out the Treks, Scott, Giant and Specialised that are available locally as well.

Adding a longer fork may upset the balance on your Blur - http://forums.mtbr.com/ may have some talk on this. Much cheaper option if doable.

Boris, Plenty of track no harder than Gap Creek/Bunya. Plus some a bit doggy. See if I can get some pictures next time I'm out There are some tracks with No Bikes signs which are off bounds. Have you checked out

The blur XC can handle a 120mm fork and you will probable find that is enough. Just add some 2.3" tyres and you'll be laughing.

I run a Fox 120RL on my alloy Blur XC and it's fine. It's hardly any taller than the Fox 100 and only kicks the head angle out a little - more in keeping with the geometry on most new bikes anyway. Santa Cruz state that the carbon Blur XC is fine with a 120mm fork. If your Blur is an alloy frame, you might have clearance issues with a bigger tyre on the rear - even 2.1s will clog with mud if it's wet. You could always just run a larger front tyre. I've been thinking of trying Continental 2.2s which should be fine in dry conditions.

Running a 160mm fork on a AM Steelframe hardtail. Easy for the Climbs, And has the travel you need.

i find it easier to climb than my old Reign Dualy

Whatever bike you decide on will be fine. I have ridden there on hardtail with 2 inch elastomer forks, 8 inch travel downhill bikes and everything in between......and that video up there is nothing......and don't ask about the trails here, just get out there and figure it out!

I rode Nerang for the first time on the Saturday before the Epic because I knew I'd have it to myself. I saw one other rider all day and he was repairing a log ride. I'd have to say that Nerang is the best place I have ridden. I rode 42km of single trail and there was more on offer and more under construction. It's reputation as a rough house is BS. One side of the park is definately rougher than the other, which is faster and smoother, but both are unreal. I can't wait to get back there. I rode a 100mm dual sus bike and it was plenty. Just go in throught he main step over and follow your nose. I had no directions and no idea. I rode less than 1km of fire trail all day and it was a blast.

I have ridden a hardtail, 4 inch(anthem x1), 5 inch (Trance X1), 6 inch (Teocali super which is still for saleSmile. I have found all the bikes to function very well. As long as you have lockout on the rear, then 4 inches is fine.

While the nerang trials aren't really "rough" there is far more climbing and technical and non groomed trails then you find in other riding ares of SE QLD.

no freaking pavers adorning our trails!

Pretty random when riders are out. I went out Fri last week (show public hol down here) and only 3 riders heading back and 3 heading out, but didn"t see anybody on the tracks. Last thur passed 5 riders on neverending and a couple over petes way. The roughness on the southern side is fun but the steep drop offs scare me a bit. A long way down on hard stuff if you go over the side
