Luxury, I had a 286SX25 with a 26MB HDD running DOS 4. I took a BIG gamble and double spaced to 42 MB, I think I had 256KB RAM I also lashed out and got a 3.5 AND 5.25 Floppies. I thought the cassette drive was crap so I left it alone. It took too long to save and load stuff.

Luxury,

From memory my first PC 8088 processor, 4.77/8Mhz accelerator, 640k RAM, 20Mb (or was that 10?) hard drive, 5.25" floppy drive, DOS2.x I think, pre CGA single tone graphics, circa 1983/84.

absolute first PC was a Tandy Electronics thing that pluged into the TV for a screen, basic keyboard on the console and you plugged in a tape recorder to either load or save programs. No instant quick loads here, start the tape recorder and go outside and play while it loaded up. If you wrote a program, you then had to get a blank tape and press record, then start the upload. Scary to think that in a blink of an eye, we can now download information from around the world, or turn on the foxtel to record via the internet.

First computer : Commodore Vic-20, 3.5k of useable ram, used audio tapes to load and save data.

Still have it and it still works.

First PC : Compaq Portable, Although It had the kickass 10mb hard drive.

The Compaq Portable was similar in performance to the IBM-PC with a 4.77 MHz 8088 processor, 128k of RAM, a single full-height 320k 5-1/4" floppy disk, and a built-in 9-inch green monochrome monitor. The complete system sold for $3000.

Best thing is with a modded original Xbox you can run a heap of emulators for old computers and game tables.

Ah, moon patrol, space invaders...........

Wow I feel so old.

But since we have migrated to this topic, my 2nd PC was an 8086. My first was a *** Smith System 80. It was a competitor to the (presumably Tandy TRS80) that X was talking about.

I still have a few 300 baud Acoustic modems which used to connect a pair of mainframes between Brisbane and Sydney. Operators would establish a phone call and then place the handset onto the modems and close the lid. That wasn't many years ago.

However what I find really amazing is the state of technology today in contrast.

The systems I work on will have dedicated 10 Gigabit links between Houston, London and Kuala Lumper next year, and in terms of CPU - the newest system has over 18000 of them. Matched to 72TB of main memory and about 2.4 Exabytes of disk. It will most likely be twice that size by the end of the year. I can't imagine what we will be using in another 20 years or so, the rate of improvement has not slowed down in the slightest from those very first computers.

By the way back on topic, I think the ipad is great - I broke down and bought one about 6 weeks ago.

for those wanting the old school game experience on your PC, google MAME = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. you can find almsot every arcade game from yesteryear using a MAME interface. some of my favourites included Phoenix and Galaga.

I made my first computer. Originally it had 192 bytes of ram and no rom. It eventually had 8K of rom and 1k of ram. My first PC type computer was a Spectravideo that I modified to become compatible with a MicroBee running CPM. I thought the storage was amazing when I added a 400k floppy drive. When I started uni, one of the mainframes only had 64k of ram and a 400meg harddrive.

The main use I would have for a ipad would be for reading ebooks. The ipad is a bit expensive just for that application.

My memory doesn't go back as far as some but I did a year of IT at uni in 1991 and we used Mac's that used Apple talk - which I am told (unreliably) was the precursor to email - anyway it was so new that in an open book exam which was held in the computer lab, we were apple talking one another the pages for the answers. No idea when that got locked down but was a great little discovery for us young enterprising students...

Back on iPad - I watched an interview with Steve Jobs the other day in which he talked about the iPad. He likened it to trucks and cars in that when motor vehicles became popular there was a very high percentage that were trucks used in agriculture. This was the only use that people foresaw for the masses so to speak. Now cars are in the majority and trucks the minority. He was saying this with the view that in the not to distant future the light version of the computer, being the tablet, would be what people wanted unless they wanted the heavy duty (or truck like) computing in which case they would have a laptop or desk top. Interesting perspective I thought.

I want a truck motor in a car with all the truck bits with all the car size. ATM the iPad is a trident, not a car but not a bike either.

I still want truck flixibility in a car. No I want a dual trrailer semi in a mii. Now all they have to do is deliver.

So us truck driving users are the equivalent of tradies in white utes on the road?

I'm with Mikey. I'll keep driving my "truck" to tow my box trailer when a car would probably suffice.

glad to see we've begun such interesting discussion. so anyone out there got an alienware super-gaming pc with top of the range components? my current box only has 511MB RAM due to only having 1 serviceable slot on the motherboard. i need to buy a 2-4gb RAM stick.... it has a bit of trouble when i multi-task.

i'd like to get an iPad but im a poor uni student, hopin to start paid work experience soon then maybe i can afford one!

I used to have an awesome windoze machine for games (Mechwarrior) but the cost of keeping up the hardware to pay the latest games just got out of reach for me, what with buying bikes and bike gear and bike clothing and bike mags.

I love computer games but just don't have the time anymore to play.

The Ipad is not versatile. No "flash" and you can only have wireless or 3g but not both.

If it was a "car" it would be more like this....

All hype, no substance.
