Hi again...yes another birthday thread...I looked but didn't find the specific thread I wanted so here is a new one. I am just curious as to what people consider to be a good helmet cam and why. My idea would be easy to use, edit and remove fromthe helmet and of couse high quality image...and not incredibly expensive. Anything like that out there? Pick any two? Also, as per the other thread on GPS, is connecting the two functions possible or useful? Cheers.

I have very little knowledge on this but happened to see some youtube footage the other day from a "GoPro HD" and it looked great. I was trying to find out more about them like cost in Australia etc but never got through it. I think it was $299US so not cheap but looked great. I have a birthday soon as well and am thinking of picking one up so keen to see how the thread goes.

If you're talking about the difference between the HD Helmet HERO and the HD HERO Naked, yes it's just the mounts. The Helmet HERO comes with the same things as the Naked, but with:

1 Headlamp-Style Head Strap
1 Vented Helmet Strap
1 extra Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts
2 Flat, 3M Adhesive Mounts
1 Three-Way Pivoting Side Arm Assembly
1 extra Quick-Release Buckles

Thanks Kei, it does help. So does the naked come with no mounts at all, or does it have one general purpose mount that will do the job of mounting to a bicycle helmet? Not sure if I have a need for the rest, but undoubtedly would find a use for them!

Mounting wise, the Naked comes with:

1 Waterproof Quick-Release Housing (180’/60 m)

1 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mount

1 Quick-Release Buckle

I don't know if they will be able to attach onto a helmet out of the box, but you might be able to buy/make a mount like the one on the Helmet HERO.

Cheers Kei...as always it boils down to whether it is worth $65 of my time to fiddle around....probably not. Sometimes I believe this is how manufactureres create their pricing structures.

There's a guy near Daisy Hill who is the distributor for the GoPro gear. Have a look at the OregonScientific ATC9K also.

I have been using a standard def GoPro and they are simple, tough and versatile. Dive rated too. The HD has a rechargeable Li-Ion battery and can take a larger SD card. Cheaper too than the HD if $$ are an issue. Here are some of my vids, super compressed and youtubed, but you get the idea. The surf video is from my brothers Go Pro HD and better editing software...

p.s The chest mount gives an awesome perspective.

thanks porridge...I'm probably going to put off this purchase till I know a bit more, but I am leaning towards the go pro too. The footage I have seen so far is less shaky compared to the contour camera, and it looks like the family could use it easily on holidays etc. The only thing I am not so keen on the the fisheye distortion, but not a big issue.

I made the mistake of buying a cheaper lower res camera for about $100 (ATC2K). Then I saw the quality of my mates Go-Pro videos and I was gobsmacked (and jealous).

It looks good because it's hi-res and wide-angle. Hi-res makes it clear, but the wide angle reduces the bumpiness because the camera is displaying a wider field of view, so slight jolts in the camera don't affect the overall picture so much.

I think it's the best around, and when I get a new cam, it'll be a go pro.

There are minor downsides: The wde-angle makes it look like you're riding on the top of a hemisphere all the time. it' makes it appear as though the world in front and to the side of the observer is sloping away and downwards. It makes the trail seem wider and the trees sparser than they really are. And it flattens out hills. So if you're filming a descent or an ascent, it doesn't appear as steep as it really is.

But I think they're minor drawbacks. Hi-Def and wide-angle is the way to go. We live in a beautiful part of the world, and we really should film it more.

Now this is a pretty new thing but has a gps in it and gives you a configurable reading i think on screen

Now the website is pretty broken but i have been told by the US supplier that this will be hitting AUS in Oct (dont know how much of this is a bum steer)through a supplier in Vic called Bentley Sports
