Vale BigTurtle

I'm sad to advise that my beloved BigTurtle (husband, bike fixer, father of the Princess, Cranky Old B@st@rd and lover of chocolate and all things with wheels) passed away this morning after a short and ugly battle with a brain tumour.

He has been in Prince Charles Palliative Care Unit for the last week and a half, where he received the most wonderful care, and was in rare and humorous form until the last few days when he's been mostly asleep. He slipped off quietly today in his sleep, which is really the way we would all have wished for it to happen.

We are sad of course, but had the benefit of time to put all of our affairs in order, say what needed to be said (although you always think of more stuff to say later) spend time together, and mentally prepare for the future. So we are looking forward to a good many things, not least of which is the "anti-funeral" we will be throwing for the BigTurtle.

It will be a serious party with a few words at the start. It will be held on Sunday 3 October, with time for people to get to the BSAC that Turtle enjoyed so much afterward. Any of our MTBDirt friends are most welcome to join us. The communal bike rack will be out for those who arrive by bike. I will post further details closer to the date or feel free to PM me.

I hope wherever he is, he's got good bikes!

Rest in Peace Pete. You have been such a large part of my life for at least the last 25 years and will be greatly missed. I know you are now in a place where there is endless single track and beach fronts to ride your bikes along, laps of Bathurst to drive yours cars around and mounds of chocolate and other delicacies to consume.

Jen, our thoughts are with you and Princess

So sad to hear of his passing, but very proud to have known him, even for such a short time.

My life, for one was made a little richer every time we crossed paths. It's not everyone you meet you can say that about, but I certainly can about Pete, Jenny and the Princess.

Happy trails Big Turtle.

Our thoughts are with you guys,

Brad, Shona and Will.

Jen, our thoughts are with you.

Life's a Dash and Pete made the most of his. I know there will be no service as such or time for eulogy's in the true sense on the Sunday, but this is something I read some time ago and it is truly relevant of Pete:

LIFE BETWEEN THE “DASH”

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on his tombstone from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came his date of birth and spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the “dash” between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that he spent alive on earth...and now only those who loved him know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own; the cars...the house...the cash, what matters is how we live and love and how we spend our “dash”.

So think about this long and hard...are there things you'd like to change?

For you never know how much time is left, that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile...remembering that this special “dash” might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read with your life's actions to rehash...would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your “dash”?

Sad news Jen. I remember BT riding behind me on a couple of occasions when I was learning and went OTB on the BSAC. Always a kind word from a generous spirit. Ride on Big Turtle.

This is a message that Peter left with the Big boss at work to be sent out to staff after he passed on, I though I would copy it here:

A life is too complex to be summed up in a few moments, and to try and do so would be a mistake. The value lies not in the bricks – not in the apparent building blocks and accomplishments – but in the mortar that ties them together. I’ve been blessed that the mortar in my life – the unwavering love and support of my family, the quality and integrity of my friends, of my colleagues and acquaintances from all walks of life, the experiences, the travels, the fun and the adventures, the people whose lives I been fortunate enough to participate in, have all made my life such a complete experience. Jenny and Kristen, I’m sorry I’m leaving so soon and I love you more than I can describe. To everyone, keep building and keep adding more mortar. Chase the things that matter and really make you happy, and ignore the things that don’t. And thank you all for having been part of my life and allowing me to be part of yours.

I'll be at the anti funeral with bells on. I will celebrate Pete's life with the gusto he lived it.

Jen and Kristen, I am sorry for your loss but I know Pete will have left you in no doubt as to how much he loved you both. If there is anything you need, you only need to call.

Love from Wingy.

Jen, that's devestating news. Big turtle was a great guy to ride with and a great contributor to MTBDirt.

BT, RIP my friend.

It saddens me that someone so fun loving has left us so soon.

I have not ridden on dirt for over 8 months as I have been in out of Brisbane since Jan, but I will definately be coming to this ride. I'll be taking everyshort cut possible, but I'm sure Pete would understand.

It goes without saying, if you need anything, let me know and I'll help however possible.

Pete is ridin endless single track with all of his mates for ever..

I remember the delight of everyone enjoying the food and friendship put on by Jen and BT in their gazebo at the end of a BSAC season. Thankyou for enriching us all and I hope i leave this earth with your dignity.Sorry I can't be there this weekend.

Sorely missed by everyone most of all by his loving family.
