Neil Ennis sent us a link to an interesting blog about a guy who has embarked on the 5400km bike ride along the longest marked multi-use trekking route in the world … the Bicentennial National Trail from Cooktown to Melbourne ... SOLO!

Well you have to admire his guts and commitment! But it's way too much adventure for me though.

It's for a good cause tho.

I've got a couple of mates who suffer depression, and I know if they took the time to ride a bike regularly they'd manage it much better.

LOS, would you happen to have the guide book for section 6, Blackbutt to the border? They are out of print and even if they were available, they are $50 each!

I am keen to have a ride of some(or all) of this section to start with, but to put it into perspective you can get the complete Tour Divide(4420km along the US Rockies) map set and guide book for $100 US, making the BNT offering look insanely expensive.

WOW ! ! !09bravo

And we complain about doing 50 or 100 ks. Dam09map

As a mountain biking community we need to show our support and maybe ride with this gentleman when he travels through our neck of the woods, is this possible ? Who would have an interest ? The bigger the showing and support , the bigger the coverage. Who has what contacts out their ?09difference

I asked Shannon about this a few months ago and he said he'd be interested.

The problem is that he rides A to B, so it would be difficult to meet up with him, ride with him, then get back to where you started. So you'd need to be dropped off, or catch the train.

If you got dropped off, the there would be a few places between Nanango and Moogerah Dam that would be accessible as a day trip.

OR If you caught the train you might be able to overnight at Maryborough, meet him on the BNT near Gungalloon, ride with him south to Oakview near Kilkivan, and then back into Gympie to catch the train home. (About $80 for a round trip, and about 2 to 3 hours each way).

Either way would be a fun adventure.

No worries LOS. I have been given a tip on where to find a copy of book 6, but thanks for the reply.

Evening all, just stumbled across the forum, thanks for spreading the word Neil, and to you all for showing an interest in my little ride. Currently in Marlborough just north of rockie resting up after probably too many kms in the last 4 days, but when I get down your way, I'd certainly be interested in joining up for a spin. My pace isn't overly quick though, just so you know. Not sure when exactly I'll hit the SE corner but will get in touch closer to the time. Happy trails folks, see you on the dirt sometime. Shannon

Shanon says he'll be riding from Esk to Murphy's Creek this Sunday.

I'm guessing that means that tomorrow (Friday) he'll be coming down the Moore - Linville section of the rail trail, and Saturday he'll be doing the section from Linville to Esk.

If anyone's out that way over the next few days, please say g'day to him Smile

I got an email from Shannon this morning:

Will be in blackbutt this arvo and going off the bnt to ride the bvrt down to esk tomorrow if you or any of the forum mob are up for an easy spin.

So if anyone wants to ride with him for the day, your best bet would be to meet him on Saturday on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail sometime on Saturday between Blackbutt and Esk.

The other alternative is back on the BNT between Esk and Murphy's Creek this Sunday

You can't miss him. He's the happy looking bloke with a strange looking one-wheeled trailer bobbing along behind his bike.

I can't meet him on Saturday as I'm already doing the Ferny Grove - Fernvale - Walloon ride.

The forestry station mentioned in the BNT guidebook on the Esk-Hampton Rd as an overnight camping spot is now just a grassy area as the buildings have long since been removed. What this means for trekkers is there no water. It is a long trek from Esk and uphill. If anyone is going to ride with Shannon I know he will appreciate extra water.

There is water available at the Gus Beutel Lookout which is a slight detour off the Esk-Hampton Rd but its well worth it as the view is great and there is a nice dirt track that takes you back to the BNT route to Murphy's Creek.

Just saw a msg on Facebook from Shannon that he's seriously thinking about packing it in. He's at Aratula at the moment, and is feeling a bit overwhelmed by the pain, and the thought of having to punch out 900m of climbing up the Great Divide today. He's done 3,100 km so far. Really makes me wish I could have ridden some of it with him.

He says it's over 4 hrs ago on his website / facebook.

Is that tracker accurate? Is he at Carney's Creek?
