Calling all mountain bike lovers

Media Release Sunshine Coast Regional Council:

16 Sep 11

Mountain bike riding is set to become a whole lot easier when council launches its Guide to Mountain Bike Tracks on the Sunshine Coast next weekend.

The Recreation Trails Reference Group Chair Councillor Debbie Blumel will launch the guide at 9am on Sunday 25 September at Parklands Conservation Park.

As part of the launch council is inviting mountain bike enthusiasts, from beginners to advanced, to take part in one of the guided mountain bike rides planned for the morning.

"The Sunshine Coast is filled with wonderful mountain bike tracks for every level of rider," Cr Blumel said.

"For the first time, riders will have access to a wide range of information on all the mountain bike tracks on the Sunshine Coast in one handy guide".

The guide is packed with information including:

  • Location of the track head;
  • GPS coordinates to guide you to where you can park your car and to allow you to find the track on Google Earth;
  • distance of the track;
  • Track suitability eg beginner, intermediate or advanced;
  • Facilities you can find along the track for example barbecues, toilets and water;
  • Highlights on each track.

A web page to accompany the guide has also been developed where you can download detailed maps and gpx files. Go to council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and look under Facilities and Recreation

"Spring is a great time to get on your bike, head outdoors and explore the fantastic tracks the Sunshine Coast has to offer".

The guide is one of a 3 part series which includes:

  • A guide to Walking Tracks on the Sunshine Coast (already produced) and
  • A guide to Horse Riding on the Sunshine Coast (currently being developed).

To take part in the launch and ride, riders are asked to meet at Radar Hill Rd, Parklands Conservation Park at 9am.

Riders will be sorted into beginners, intermediate and advanced. The Gravity Mountain Bike Club will guide each ride with help from the Bushrangers Mountain Bike Club, Noosa Trail Blazers Mountain Bike Club and D’Aguilar Range Cycle Club. If you are interested in joining a mountain bike club, information about each club will be available on the day.

Don’t forget to bring along your bike, water, helmet, protective gear and sunscreen. If you don’t have a bike and would like to participate, Bike On has offered free bike and helmet hire for the morning. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 5474 3322

Copies of the guide will be available at the launch and are also available from visitor information centres and council offices, or by phoning council on 5475 8501.

Shameless plug follows:

The maps available at the SCRC website are from the 4th edition of the book "Where to Mountain Bike in South East Queensland" by Gillian Duncan and Mark Roberts (that would be me).

SCRC collaborated with us on the maps and their input has been awesome. Take a look at their website for places you would never learn about otherwise.

For more information about the book take a look at www.organisedgrime.com.au. We expect that it will be published before the end of October.

Parklands, just north of Nambour and right alongside the Brice Highway, is one of the standout MTB venues on the Sunshine Coast. It has 24km of very entertaining quality singletrack through some amazingly varied terrain.
