Karawatha to Ipswich to Wyaralong - Flinders - Karawatha Corridor

Went out to the opening of the Ipswich to Boonah trail this morning which had a consultation meeting for the Flinders Kara corridor afterwards. Didn't get a chance to talk to anyone doing the consultation which was dissappointing. I'll have to do a written submission instead.

Got my email in. Would love to see a big trail network in place here. Interesting to note that the Busharanges MTB club on the Sunshine Coast are working towards a big MTB trail, about 160 km's I think. This could be an opportunity for something similar to be developed closer to Brisbane.

Just got a very prompt reply from SEQ Catchments. I'd encourage everyone interested in the development of MTB in SEQ to drop them an email.

For those wondering what to say. Just click this and hit send. The more support the better.

The thing about consultation is that the government is sometimes actually looking for information from 'experts'. The stock standard "I think it's a great idea' response will only assist so much. I'm not stating anything that anyone in this forum doesn't already know but the govt / public servants may not understand the benefits of MTBing to the community in terms of achieving social, health, community and tourism/ industry needs - so these need to be pointed out. Also the fact that MTBing is actually less detrimental to the environment than equestrian pursuits and un-managed motoX is a significant plus. The work that MTB enthusiasts do regarding trail care in partnership with rangers is a big plus for government in terms of community partnerships as well as supporting environmental sustainability. I don't live in the area but if anyone would like a hand preparing a major submission I would be happy to assist.

I agree. As a MTB community, we ae more likely to get a what we want if we can clearly articulate what that is and the benefits are.

I'd be keen to assist in putting a submission in. In a general sense, I would like to see a trail from Karawatha to Mt Joyce and out to Ipswich.

If anyone else is interested in putting a submission together let me know.

@FTLOL some assistance in preparing a submission would be good. I've sent you a PM.

Good call and thanks for the link Floody. Some good points made and again I agree on principle with the aim to get something going. If this bollocks can be circumnavigated I am ready with rakehoe to do something.

Karawatha to Ipswich to Wyaralong - Flinders - Karawatha Corridor

For those interested I'm putting together a written submission. As per Sue2's suggestion, it's probably a good idea to spell out what mountain bikers might want and what the associated benefits are.

I've emailed SEQ Catchments and they've suggested that would be a good idea. The submission needs to be in by 16th of December. So if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions, post them here or email me.

@SEQ Catchments
Submissions need to be in by the 16th of December.
Submissions mad to date have been of varied composition, I wouldn’t worry too much about the formalities of it all. Just make sure the document states your ideas for the corridor, and any issues or comments etc. that you would like to make.
I will ensure it gets to the correct people upon submission.

For a start, I think what the Bushrangesrs are doing on the Sunshine Coast is along the lines of what I would like to see out of this corridor. Since there isn't a lot of time, I thought the stated Goals for that project would be pretty similar to what many would be happy with.

---------------------------------------------------

Great Rides Project Goals

A human powered trail system connecting the Sunshine Coast from north to south, east to west through the melding of existing tracks & trails, easements, pathways for all non-motorized pursuits.

Primary objectives of this project;

  1. To ensure the wider community and visitor’s the opportunity to experience some “remoteness” the unique environments on our Coast, those special places that you would never be seen from a train, plane, bus or casino.
  2. To provide a vital “eco-tourism” project that provides attractors for a new type of active visitor. The world wide trend to active tourism is truly under developed in this region, as studies indicate.
  3. Ensure that the trail system is usable to a broad range of the community IE: multi –use were possible, handicapped and adaptive sport trail sections within the system, a trail grade of no more than 5% for 95% of the trail. Local connections (nodes) via a natural trail system utilizing some existing networks and easements/fire roads/reserves.
  4. Maintain an environmental and cultural ethos with research during the study phase and conservation maintenance of the environment during and after construction.
  5. The usage of the trail would not be restricted to single-use; it would be primarily non- motorized, with some exception for handicap access shuttles and maintenance services.
  6. Provide a safer alternative for off-road travel; International Mt. Bike Assoc. (I.M.B.A.) standard trails that are under the tree canopy for shade were possible, way-marked for ease of navigation.
  7. Ideally the trail project will provide business stimulus and local employment, contractors, staff training in a diverse range of areas from construction through to cultural interpretation...
  8. Ensure that trail heads of each section begin and finish within easy access of a village node (accommodation and hospitality). This could be a 5 day adventure for some, conversely day trips for others. A trail for every -body.
  9. Establish a management working group to manage and maintain the project during feasibility planning, construction, and into the future. Establish a Memorandum of Understanding MOU with stakeholders during this phase.
  10. Aim to be Eco-tourism certified within 6 months of the first trail phase opening /2012-13
  11. Build a “Social enterprise” from a single project.

Be great to have some green corridors joined to make some epic loops.

So hows this - this trail down to Boonah (from Kara), then loop up Cunnghams Gap, across to Goomburra, over the range to Laidley, back via OHV and return to Kara.

Nice.

We could link it up to Bayview with a short road connection.

I noticed the following in the consultation report.
http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/land/planning/pdf/flinders-karawatha-consultation-report.pdf
Corridor vision/future management

  • Suggestions for more mountain-biking trails with an idea to create aninternationally recognised trail similar to ‘The Mundabiddi Trail’ in WesternAustralia.
  • Several suggestions to create annual major horse-riding and mountain-biking events.

Signs of a bright future for Mountain Biking in this region.

Karawatha to Ipswich to Wyaralong - Flinders - Karawatha Corridor

Rode a section of the Ipswich Boonah trail last sunday - had an off road Audax on the sat night, so camped out with the kangaroos after the event near the trailhead adjacent Hardings Paddock. Good trail. Not singletrack, just solid backcountry doubletrack. Lot of altitude change out there, I could only get as far as Flinders Plum due to track closures, was a good slog with a loaded bike. Will be back for sure.
