Brakes....I have none!!

Good Evening All,

I know this is a long shot but I'm supposed to be meeting a mate for a ride down at Nerang at about 6.30am in the morning and have just done something to my front brake.

It felt a little tight so I tried to loosen it off a little. Next thing there's brake fluid coming from the brake so now I need to have them bled but don't have any of the gear to do it not a clue where to start! I know for somebody that knows what they're doing, this would probably be a pretty quick fix but for me....

Anybody know of any shops or mechanics that may be able to help out?? 09doctor

Cheers.

Very long shot with only an 8 hour window... Increase your chances a teeny tiny bit, specify what type of brakes they are and which suburb you are in. Then mtbdirters between there and Nerang may be able to put their hand up. I have a bleed kit but not the experience...

Brakes....I have none!!

Thanks Kenzo....it kinda happened at the worst time, not that there's a good time for this sort of thing to happen but would have been better if it had have happened a little earlier in the evening. Then I got a little excited trying to find or figure out if I could get them fixed...

Anyway, I'm in Greenslopes in Brisbane and my brakes are Avid Elixir....

Given the time of the day, I'm sort of resigned to the fact that I'll be paying a visit to FTR in the morning to see if they can help.

Thanks again Kenzo..

Well, hope it went well for you Chris. I went to bed after posting that so didn't see your reply until now. My 'universal' bleed kit does have the fittings for Avid brakes and I have the right brake fluid too. If you're keen to try, you can be the third person to borrow the kit to give it a whirl. So far it has done Hayes and Formula brakes. Just send me a PM. I will probably log back in to mtbdirt later this evening.

Brakes....I have none!!

Thanks heaps for that Kenzo but I end up dropping my bike off to the guys at FTR this morning. They were really helpful. May not be able to pick it up til Thursday night so I won't be riding this weekend. Shame cos this morning looked perfect for an early roll. Thanks heaps again for the offer though! Really wanna try to get along for a ride and meet some people from the forum soon so hope to catch up.

There are a couple of You Tube Vids on how to bleed Avid Brakes. I've followed one of them with the bleed kit successfully. The only thing i added to the procedure was to use a small zip tie to keep the bleed tube on. It kept slipping off the bleed fitting. Otherwise. very good to follow.

Cheers GH....I think a bleed kit is going to be a pretty smart investment. I just finished watching that link, thanks for that, and it didn't look that difficult....same with everything I guess, the more you do it the easier it will become and thanks for the tip with the zip tie too!

Once I do get a bleed kit, I think I'll probably end up watching that link a few times before attempting it.

Thanks again!

While this wasn't the problem you had on this occasion, the other thing to be careful about with Avids is tipping your bike upside down. The latest version has an air trap, but all previous versions are notoriously hard to bleed completely and the lever will go straight to the bar if a tiny air pocket ends up in the wrong place.

Thanks for the info Noel...new bike (second hand but new for me) and first time I've used or had Avid's so I was unaware of that. Cheers!
