Apres Velo T Shirts pricing

...they have some funky designs, but check the pricing! $50 aussie for a shirt that is $30 US, plus postage. And our dollar is worth what, $1.08 US? They have got to be kidding!

Like most things from US, son just got a pair of skate shoes. $55 aus in a big order with some mates from US. $145 local groan and local retail are complaining about poor sale conditions.

One of my riding mates just came back from a skiing holiday in the US, during which he visited lots of bike stores. One bike shop owner in California told him they call August "Aussie August" because that's when all the Australians arrive to pick up their pre-ordered new season bikes. He and I both ride Santa Cruz Blur XC Carbons - over three grand for a frame in Oz. One shop having a sale had the complete bike with full 10 speed XTR for US$3099. Similarly specced carbon Tallboy for $4000, and they're supposed to be in short supply. Either bike would be in the eight grand ballpark here. Same applied to bike gear, clothing, etc. Some bike shops here are trying to compete with the overseas (and local) online sellers, but it often costs them more to buy in stock than the online prices.

Yup. I don't want to reignite the whole LBS vs online debate - we've done that to death on here. But seriously, we (Australia) need to get our you know what together. Clearly our import, wholesale and distribution chains suck up a lot of money. Too many middlemen? Too much red tape? Dunno, but someone is creaming off the difference between Aussie retail prices and the real prices paid elsewhere. I suspect (in most cases) it's not the LBS, although I'm sure they play their part.

Cool. BTW, I did get an explanation from them that I will post later. Good of them to reply and they are reviewing their pricing...
