Bunya Sunday Arvo Cruise

An open invitation to anyone who'd like to join in for a ride in the Bunyaville State Forest on a Sunday afternoon. The ride has been going since Mother's Day 2007 is on every Sunday. I will post up a reminder in this thread every Friday and also post an hour or two prior to the ride if it's ever to be called off due to bad weather or other problems.

Where & When: Departs the notice board at the top of Jurassic at 3.30 pm sharp every Sunday. You can also meet at my place at 3.00pm or at the gate close to Marara Ct at around 3.15pm. We finish back at the Jurassic Noticeboard around 5pm.

Pace: pacesoceasywith plenty of rest stops. How it goes is we each go as fast as we can but then we all stop at the top of the bigger climbs and at trail junctions to allow everyone to catch up and have a breather. No one gets left behind and we proceed as fast as the slowest person, which is quite often me (d'oh!), but don't be at all concerned if it turns out to be you. It just gives everyone else more time to chat. hihi

Route: Will be one of these below (Click here for Bunyaville Trail Map)
Route 1: Jurassic > Creek > Kokoda > Carnage > around the dam > Steps > Nutcracker
Route 2: Creek > Bunker Rd > No Brakes > Steve Jones > Weenie > The Wall > Steps > Nutcracker
Route 3: Waynes World > The Dark Side > Minivan > ZigZag > GT Break > Creek
Route 4. Ironbark (Click here for Ironbark trail map): Linkfield Dr > Water Tank > Trickles > Ballbuster > Tunnel > Lanita Rail Trail > up Mango Tree (turn right at the intersection where the train crash sign is) > Sunset > back to Jurassic Noticeboard via IHTO2.
Route 5. The Reverse Route (Bunya): down GT Break > Up ZigZag > Down Hippy House (take the left fork and turn right at the end when you see houses) > along Northern break (take the right fork at the top of the first hill then turn left back towards the houses) > Along the boundary then up AS6 break > Up Jurassic > Down Policemans > Down Mindy > Up Nutcracker > Up Bunker > Up Creek.

There may be slight changes to these routes on the day depending on who shows up or what we're all in the mood for but the indicated starting points and times are firm.

What to bring: Mountain Bike, water, tools and spares.

Emergency Contact Details: Please carry a mobile phone (that doesn't require a PIN to access it) with your preferred emergency contact person listed under the name "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) in your contact list. Alternatively wear dog tags or carry a note in an obvious place in your back pack.

Legal: This is a social ride between friends with a common interest, not a race or professionally organised event. You ride at your own risk. There is no liable entity and no insurance to cover broken bodies or equipment in the event of a bingle. The final responsibility for all parties is ultimately that of the riders involved.

Hope to see you there!

On qman's suggestion I've altered the route to include Kokoda & Carnage and omitted Shooter & Cheers. I rode those today and they're definitely more fun but there are a couple of spots that are a little more technical. We can add Minivan, Wayne's World or head over to Hobbits if we're knocking it off too quickly.

Rode the altered route this morning and it's very cool. 2thumbsup There's a little more single trail than before and it's easier physically I think. It's just on 16km which I did in around the 1 hr 10 min mark at a steady pace with minimal rests so we should be good for an easy 1.5 hrs with stops. I'm tossing around the idea of adding hobbits & the ring road etc or maybe minivan and/or waynes world to take it out closer to 2 hrs but we'll see what everyone reckons with it as is for the time being. Or maybe we should just throw in a random one each week?

We could even keep Shooter & Cheers in the usual loop to flesh out to the target time of 2 hrs. I'm easy....As Oxford said - "Very nice way to end the weekend..." see you tomorrow claph

There's a bit of a very light sprinkle from time to time today but it's not real rain so we're still all go at this stage. We should hit ZigZag about 3.15 (give or take 5mins) for those people meeting there. I'll have my usual fluoro green workwear shirt on, riding a blue Giant Rincon if you haven't met me before.

I was wondering what happened to you, but I thought you'd probably catch us up easy enough if you'd thought you just missed us. Yeah, we only ended up getting slightly damp towards the final stretch.Great ride again everyone! claph I hope the route changes were to everyone's liking.redrocket & -asa- were kicking our butts a bit too easily so I don't blame you guys for moving on, but it was inspiring to see how fast those climbs can be done. Smileqman, those hills are getting way too easy for you. We might have to put some rocks in your camelbak or something.. hmmGreat to see you along Peace. The pace you were hitting those singles on your first ride showed you'll be one to catch in a month or two.I think I might need to revise my diet & training program if I'm going to keep up with you lot for much longer boohoo

Thanks for the company today fellas - OCG, Redmer, bbanger, Peace, Lee - and for a little while -asa- & the rocketship. Sorry we missed you Oxford - was expecting you to blast by us at some stage...Nice to meet you Lee and well done for a first ride Peace. 2thumbsup It was pretty good having an intensive care doctor along just in case I crashed. OCG promises that the hills will seem easier next time.Nobody won the bloodloss award today - though a couple of nervous riders when Jurassic got slippery at the end.see you next time. wavey

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who rode today. Your patience with my obvious poor fitness was much appreciated ::thumbsup4For those off you who are sitting out here reading this thread and wondering if I should join in, I'll give you a point of view from a first time mountain biker.I purchased my first mtb about 3 weeks ago in an endeavor to get fit. I have not exercised in any real sense since starting my medical degree in 1997, prior to that I was reasonable fit doing 10 hours exercise/week.Since buying the bike, I have ridden mostly along paths & road, with a total of about 400m off-road until today.I was warned that the first hill was the hardest, I phrase that would haunt me through the course of the ride, (all in good fun of course)sarcasm. So after I survived the climb I thought this was going to be OK,. We then came to the Zig-zag, a formidable piece of single trail with lots of tricky drops (all less than 2 feet), turns and small rises. Heaps of fun & a dash of fear. No blood loss though so that too was fine Next came another climb, 1/2 way up, I burst a lung, by 3/4 I almost died and at the top I wished I had. At this point I seriously contemplated heading home along the Jinker Track. Then heard "that is the toughest climb of the day, the rest gets easier. So my ego got support from that and I rode onwards- and am very glad I did. The rest of the ride was slightly easier and at several times I had to walk the bike, and at the end of each subsequent 7 or so hills I would hear "that is the toughest climb of the day" but overall it was a great experience, and will be back again.I really have to thank the other riders for their patience. I was last every time and they happily waited until I was conscious enough to continue before starting the next stretch. I never felt a burden to anyone haillSummary- Great ride with great people. Physically hard for a unfit fool like me, but just what I need to get back into shape again. 2thumbsup

Mate, we just pretend to be waiting... I myself need the rest as it takes me a lot of effort to go up the F*%*& hills. I had a good time today, I'm happy to be in the saddle again. I did quite some mountainbiking years back but haven't done much lately (I think I did ride 3 times over the past 12 months at most) My only worry is if my bike can take the beating but it seems to survive. See you guys next week !

QuoteTounge outeace Next came another climb, 1/2 way up, I burst a lung, by 3/4 I almost died and at the top I wished I had. While there's quite a few smaller climbs, there's 4 of particular note on this route. The first one right where we first hit the dirt is tough but because we're fresh at that point it's not so bad. Then at the bottom of ZigZag up to the Jinker Track there's a short steep section followed by a long, long steady but not so steep climb (the longest in BSF at around 1.3 km according to Oxford). The one at the top of Kokoda has to be the cruelest with a steep bit right at the end of an already tough climb. And that one from the end of the Creek Track up to Jinker Track hurts me every time. (I know I can just make that one if I've had a decent rest first but I usually haven't had that luxury so I'll be walking at some point nearly every time). Probably the biggest mistake most people make with climbs is to choose too high a gear and try to muscle their way up while the best way is to drop down a gear or two and pedal really fast. (See "spinning" at http://www.mtbdirt.com.au/newbies/newbiespinning.html ). It's much harder on the heart & lungs at first but once you get the hang of it it really does make it easier.
