Commuting Conditions

At the suggestion of a few members and following a number of individual fragmented posts in the Commuting thread because of the recent wet weather, we now have a sticky thread dedicated to commuting conditions and means to resolve the issues. The purpose of this thread is only for the discussion of conditions of bikepaths and related issues. Things such as obstacles such as fallen trees etc, paths that susceptible to damage or may cause damage to cyclists or any other issues that may be considered relevant to riders, their own safety or the ongoing sustainability of the payhs themselves. A couple of points to note:

  • For the benefit of everyone, please do not go off topic, people do not want to sift through off topic banter to find out what is happening on/to the pathways.
  • Try to be accurate with descriptions and names. Use something like or google maps to pinpoint places of concern. Wikimapia allows you to copy the URL for a specific GPS point.
  • This is not a thread for discussion of pathways from a what we have or do not have point of view, it is for discussion of what we have and how it is affected, ie storm damage, trees down, waterlogged from rain etc etc.
  • Post in the thread if you wish to make an enquiry, hopefully someone will be able to let you know about the pathway, or if you see something that others may be interested in knowing ie a path to avoid for what ever reason or a new issue created by a storm (tree over path), post here as well.
  • As time goes on we will endeavour to remove old posts about older conditions, ie if the paths are dry, no point keeping information about paths being wet/underwater etc. This is in order to keep the thread current and hopefully informative for members. As this thread develops the above criteria may change, but I'm sure that everyone understands what we are looking for from this thread.

Queensland Traffic Information web site,

Quote:aaronwray Another information source is http://131940.qld.gov.au/default.shtml Queensland Traffic Information web site. It has information on Traffic Incidents, Road Works, Special Events Info, live web cameras etc across the whole state.

RACQ Traffic Information web site,

Quote:Rich the Stitch The RACQ has a road conditions and flooding report covering the whole of Queensland. Especially useful for those outside of the South East corner as there are few alternatives to get that information.

For Information about BCC logged in conditions,

Quote:Toenails Here's another link for the first post. It's BCC's Cycling "What's on" page, but it also contains information on Bikeway closures and detours: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCCpc=PC_2644

To contact BCC about issues,

Quote:AndrewBQ In the aftermath of this week's heavy rains, there are maintenance issues all across Brisbane's bikeway network. BCC's Active Transport unit has asked for the assistance of Brisbane cyclists to pinpoint urgent maintenance issues such as debris blocking bike-paths, areas still suffering flooding etc. Call the BCC on 3403 8888 or visit the Council's maintenance web page to let them know what needs fixing. That's what we've posted on the BQ website. Can I encourage MTB Dirt commuters that as well as letting us know where the problems are, that you let BCC know as well. It will speed up their response.

For Water Level information go here:

Example of information:

http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540111.plt.shtml

When the above chart shows a level of 31metres or more, the Kedron Brook pathway is usually not traversable and under water.

Commuting Conditions

I rode KBB today and the worst of it is around the Gympie Rd works, mainly because the safety fencing is all down creating a hazard in itself. Otherwise the water level is down. What's really spooky is that the water obviously rose and fell very quickly as around the Shaw Rd area there are dead fish on the pathway, some quite large. The worst part of it all is the copious amounts of silt everywhere, very slippery and I wouldn't wear white.

This was yesterday, courtesy of another forum, not sure the exact location, but it is KBB possibly near Webster Rd:

Commuting Conditions

The CBD BUG has information on the closures available at

http://cbdbug.blogspot.com/2011/01/post-flood-bikeway-states.html

Please let us know of any other closures or detours as you become aware of them. As most bike paths follow creeks silt and mud significantly increase your risk of injury. The below is off the BCC website -

Volunteering

Brisbane City Council would like to thank volunteers for their extraordinary efforts over the weekend in rebuilding our city.

This Volunteer Centre is not operating today, but Council encourages you to assist your local community in any way you can.

Residents can either assist individuals, or assist Council in flood-affected areas by mowing local parks, picking up litter, sweeping toilet blocks, pathways and bikeways and by cleaning park equipment such as playgrounds and barbecues.

This will allow Council to focus on the recovery in other areas.
