Trail Conditions - Gap Creek/Mt Coot-tha/Brisbane Forest Park/Mt Crosby

At the suggestion of s.y.m.o and following a number of individual fragmented threads because of the recent wet weather, we now have a couple of sticky threads dedicated to the various venues (collectively in some cases) and their conditions. The purpose of this thread is only for the discussion of the condition of trails and related issues. Things such as obstacles over the trails such as fallen trees etc, trails that susceptible to damage because they are wet/waterlogged or any other issues that may be considered relevant to riders, their own safety or the ongoing sustainability of the trails themselves. A couple of points to note:

  • For the benefit of everyone, please do not go off topic, people do not want to sift through off topic banter to find out what is happening on/to the trails.
  • Try to be accurate with trail/location descriptions and names. Use the trail maps from the links in the Trails Info
  • This is not a thread for discussion of trail content as it relates to trail care, it is for discussion of trail content as it relates to changes caused by factors outside of trail care, ie storm damage, trees down, waterlogged from rain etc etc.
  • Post in the thread if you wish to make an enquiry, hopefully someone will be able to let you know about the venue, or if you see something that others may be interested in knowing ie a trail to avoid for what ever reason or a new featured created by a storm (tree over trail), post here as well.
  • Only discuss the trails relevant to the thread you are in, if you wish to discuss multiple locations, post in the threads relating to those locations. It just helps keep the thread on topic.
  • Only discuss legal trails, illegitimate trails do not help us as MTBers with trail access issues, so discussion of those trails in legal venues (or other venues) is not what this thread is for.

As time goes on we will endeavour to remove old posts about older conditions, ie if the trails are wet, no point keeping information about trails being dry etc. This is in order to keep the thread current and hopefully informative for members. As this thread develops the above criteria may change, but I'm sure that everyone understands what we are looking for from these threads.

A short rule of thumb is if you are leaving tracks it's too wet. When you leave a tyre rut the water will follow it and before you know it, it's a rut. Little ruts lead to bigger ruts and trail widening as people avoid the rut. This increases impact till eventually someone notices the excessive impact and complains about it. The bottom lines is this leads to trails being closed.

I rode the fire trails from Beilby Rd to Gold Creek Boundary this morning. Gap Creek looked fairly mushy. I didn't ride any single track but, based on the fire trail condition, figured they'd need a few days to dry out.

I rode the fire roads from Boscombe Rd to MT Nebo and the fire roads are in quite good condition considering the rain.

I would stay off the single tracks for a few days. As long there is no rain over the next few days it should be OK to ride. But the forecast is not looking good.

I was at gap ck today. Only a few small patches of mud, rest of the trail was good. Rocket frog is closed for maintenance after all the rain.

I rode the gap on Tuesday. Rocket Frog is still closed. I think trailcare will tend to it this weekend as it is the 2nd sat of the month.09smile2

It is closed but there is a pretty well worn line around the sign. People must really struggle to read.

Yep, Still a closed sign at the Highwood / Gap Creek Road end. Noticed it on the drive home tonight.

The best ( or worst ) i saw was people walking / riding past the "area closed due to active fires" a couple of years ago.

Well done on the Wallaby Way re route. Awsome additions compared to the old trail. Its nice to see some newly improved trails out at the gap.
